Dominica’s pioneering improv troupe, Mission Improvable, is set to present an innovative performance inspired by Caribbean folk tales featuring the legendary characters Anansi and Tiger. The group issued a press release sharing that the show will involve two teams, “Team Anansi” and “Team Tiger,” competing through various spontaneous improvisation games:
“What happens if you try to go bowling on the moon? Have Anansi and Tiger ever tried that? You may find out if you come to the improvised theatre show by Dominica’s first improv group, Mission Improvable.”
It further says that audience members will have the power to determine which team performed better or delivered the funniest moments, thereby settling the age-old rivalry between the two iconic figures.
Sonja Wiencke, the founder of Mission Improvable, explained that improvisational theatre offers a unique experience for both performers and viewers.
“Improv is a very special type of performance, for both the audience and the performers,” Wiencke stated. “As an audience member, you’re not just passively sitting there, watching some talented people on a stage, you’re co-creating the performance through your suggestions. And as a performer, it’s exciting because you have to use everything you’ve got—your intuition, your intellect, your technical skills that we practice in rehearsals, and your team. Fortunately, Mission Improvable is made up of amazing people, and we have gotten very good at playing off each other’s ideas.”
Improv theatre is characterized by its unscripted nature, where scenes unfold spontaneously based on audience input. The absence of scripts, props, or costumes does not hinder the delivery of lively characters, emotional depth, or dramatic and comedic resolutions. Each performance is a unique creation, with no two shows identical. For instance, say organizers, Mission Improvable’s recent public performance featured a storyline involving alien abduction and an escape on a flying pig, showcasing the limitless possibilities of improvisational theatre.
Formed in the summer of 2024 as part of the Waitukubuli Artist Association, Mission Improvable has participated in various events, including Rhythm & Rhymes/Xpression at Ka Tai, Lyrics Under The Stars, and the Waitucirque Festival Nou Sé Histoire. The group is now preparing for its inaugural solo show.
Helenia D., an avid spectator who has attended nearly every Mission Improvable performance, shared her enthusiasm: “It’s fun seeing someone, on cue, say something that might or might not make sense—that is the funny part. Every show has been a wonderful experience.”
