Dominica’s rising star in sprinting, Kerelle Etienne, showcased her abilities and grit at the 52nd CARIFTA Games on Saturday, representing her country in the Girls’ Under-20 100m race.
Dominica Athletics Association stated that at the semi-finals, Etienne put forth a remarkable effort, finishing third in her heat with a time of 11.76 seconds. Despite her strong performance, she fell short of qualifying for the final round.
Reflecting on her experience, Etienne expressed, “I feel great since this is my first Under-20. It’s not what I expected, but I still did great.”
She also acknowledged the mix of emotions she felt before the semi-finals, stating she was “quite confident and nervous” at the same time.
Though she did not make it to the finals, the DAA lauded Kerelle’s hard work, commitment, and promising capabilities. Her journey serves as an inspiration to younger athletes in Dominica, emphasizing what can be achieved through determination and effort, said the statement.
“One positive takeaway from today is to not give up and to run through the line,” she remarked.
The Girls’ Under-20 100m crown was ultimately won by Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas, who finished the final with an impressive time of 11.26 seconds.

Every athlete at the CARITA Games gives his/her best efforts. The inept, uncaring cabal because of their failure to provide the adequate facilities and their disdain for bona fide Dominicans, are preventing the local athletes from fulfilling their true potential.
Huge congratulation to the javelin thrower for his gold medal effort. Hope there are bigger and greater things to come for you in the near future.
Well hopefully the Jamaican exposure will do her well, since she attends school there.
Lets wait and see. She certainly has potential. Hope she will soon display it in blazing colours.
I saw the race in the under 100m under 20 girls dash. Although she was not given a chance to finish in the top 2, she had a great start, and led the field for about 90 meters, and just missed the second spot. But this young lady has a lot of potential. If she can stay injury free, she is surely one to look out for in the future, as her strength and endurance are gradually nurtured.
