Donald Trump will be facing what is the first criminal trial of a former US president on March 25 in Manhattan.
The charges, reportedly, originate from hush money paid to a porn star by the billionaire in 2016.
District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg is quoted as being “pleased” by the decision, handed down by Judge Juan. M. Merchan on Thursday.
If convicted, Trump will face 34 felony charges which carry a maximum sentence of four years in prison.
The resolution is a watershed moment in US History not only because Trump will be the lone former President to face criminal charges, but because it rebuffs any attempts to strategically avoid legal consequences by stalling the trial process and/or dismissing the case in the event of a presidential win.
Trump is hopeful of clinching the Republican candidate nomination. Yet, even with a successful bid for nomination and an election to office, because it is not a federal case, it is exempt from being dismissed using the power of the presidency.
The former president faces 91 felony counts across four criminal indictments from prosecutors in Florida, Georgia, and Washington–where he is charged with plotting to overturn the 2020 election–as well as the case in Manhattan.
