In observance of Black History Month, Dr. Damien Dublin, head of the Dominica Reparations Committee, emphasizes the importance of pausing, reflecting, and recommitting to the preservation and promotion of our rich history.
Black History Month is not merely a time to remember the past; it is an opportunity to understand it deeply, honor those who shaped it, and ensure that the lessons of our ancestors continue to inspire and guide us into the future.
In an audio statement, Dr. Dublin underscored that our national heroes, freedom fighters, cultural icons, and everyday individuals who resisted oppression and contributed to the building of our nation deserve far more than a fleeting mention.
He says they merit celebration, discussion, and pride in our collective narrative. Calling on radio stations, media outlets, schools, churches, community groups, and families to actively elevate local history initiatives, he also asserts that we should give prominent space to our heroes and pivotal milestones. Our stories must be told by us, in our own voices, rooted in our lived experiences.
Addressing educators and parents, Dr. Dublin advocates for history to be a tool of enlightenment for Black children.
“History should be taught to educate, inspire, and excite our children, to highlight the achievements and triumph of Black people,” he averred.
In this regard, Dr Dublin highlights the importance of showcasing the achievements and triumphs of Black people, reminding us that our history extends beyond slavery, mentioning Black civilizations such as the Kingdom of Kush, Benin, and the Ashanti Empire and their significant contributions across science, medicine, agriculture, industry, and commerce.
He emphasizes notable inventions by Black inventors and innovators—such as the traffic light, automatic gear shift, carbon filament (which made practical light bulbs possible), improved ironing boards, artificial hearts, pacemakers, and even toilet paper!
According to Dr Dublin, these are achievements that deserve recognition and pride. Dr. Dublin also advocates for our children to learn about influential figures like Robert Nesta Marley, Marcus Garvey, Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, and Ibrahim Traore, so they understand their heritage and the global impact of Black leadership.
By exposing children to stories of triumph and resilience, Dr. Dublin believes we inspire a new generation to walk the path of excellence, instilling pride in who they are and where they come from.
This Black History Month, Dr. Dublin urges us to move beyond superficial symbolism, adding that a steadfast commitment to education, truth, and cultural pride is needed. Honoring those who sacrificed for our freedom means ensuring their stories live on—not just in books but in our classrooms, homes, and communities, says Dr Dublin.
Finally, he expressed gratitude to the media and the public for their ongoing support on behalf of the Dominica Reparations Committee, and encouraged everyone to play a role in keeping our history alive, building a future rooted in the rich legacy of our ancestors.
“If we do not teach our history with intention and creativity, we risk losing the connection between our people, youth, and their identity. People who understand their history are better equipped to shape the future with confidence and purpose,” he asserted.
Listen to audio statement below:
Dunce Dominicans cannot be bought and the cannot be bribed.Between 1995 and 2000 your party BOASTED about money meeting money every Dominican had money. So much so people would light $20 bills looking for a 25¢ one man was given $4,000,000 to manage UWP 2000 general election campaign. In 2000 they gave their candidates hundreds of thousands of dollars from the sale of passports to BRIBE the voters. They failed, and with all the money that was meeting money,UWP was kicked out of office. That was so because too many jacks and clowns were supporting UWP.And the jacks and clowns continue to do so.
Not that there is anything wrong with it, but I am sure the Dr. Dublin is well aware the Black History Month is an American thing.
Dr. Dublin would do well to tell us why he insists on being part of a cabal that thrives on enslaving people, using money.
