Dr Fontaine welcomes Paris to UWP leadership bid; confident he will retain member support

(L-r) Dr Thomson Fontaine, Delbert Paris

Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Dr. Thomson Fontaine has welcomed the entrance of Senator Delbert Paris into the race for leadership of the party.

“Let me say that I welcome the entrance of Mr. Delbert Paris, the Junior Senator from Marigot into the race for leadership of the United Workers Party and in fact anyone who feels so inclined to contest for the leadership,” Dr. Fontaine said during a recent interview. “The UWP is a very democratic organization and according to our constitution every year we meet to elect our leaders.”

He added that anyone who has something to contribute is welcome to do so.

Paris, who is also a civil engineer, and experienced community leader, officially announced his candidacy for leadership of the UWP last week. The senator asserts that his professional experience in the construction industry, having participated in several notable projects inside and outside of Dominica, along with his involvement in agriculture, particularly being a lead member of one of Dominica’s only international award-winning cocoa-producing firms, allows him to provide a unique set of practical, applicable sustainable solutions for the development of these two growth engines in our economy.

According to Dr. Fontaine, he is confident that he has the support of the members of the UWP.

“I was elected first in December of 2022 when I faced Mr. Clement Marcellin and again in 2023 when I won again a second time,” he stated. “This will be the third election in three years and I am very confident that the same [people] who supported me in the past will continue to throw their support behind me.”

Furthermore, he used the opportunity to appeal to all of Dominica to stand behind the UWP, as the party makes a great effort to bring a better day to Dominica.

“My experience is well known, I have served for many years as a Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund. More recently I have been involved in diplomacy in South Sudan, contributing to that country,” Dr. Fontaine explained.

The UWP leader made a commitment that he will be back in Dominica at the end of this year, “completely and totally focused on Dominica.”

“And so, I believe that the persons who will be voting at the delegates conference will take that into consideration since that was a main concern that they had, the fact that I had to be working overseas back and forth, but now I can commit that I will be there full-time to lead the charge for a better Dominica,” Dr.Fontaine stated.

Senator Paris’ political career has been marked by his appointment to Dominica’s Parliament two years ago and his subsequent focus on analyzing finances, program operations, and existing policies to help improve Dominica’s governance structures. Outlining sustainable and people-centered goals has given his bid for leadership overwhelming public support.

Senator Paris’ candidacy is described as representing a combination of professional expertise and grassroots activism, with a strong focus on expanding the party’s appeal across all sectors of Dominican society.

He believes that the next general elections in Dominica will be the most critical elections in Dominica’s 46 years of democratic independence and he is committed to serving his country and its people at the highest level.

I am confident that the probability of UWP winning the upcoming national election with Dr. Thomson Fontaine as its leader is miniscule to nil.

Has he done anything substantive to retain that privilege? All he has done was to organise an ill-conceived ‘economic summit’ at an expensive hotel, and literally contributed thousands of dollars to the hotelier, who is a sworn adversary of the UWP.

UWP needs new blood, fresh thinking, innovative and novel strategies.

Dr. Fontaine always touts his time with the UN and that of South Sudan. The UN is a white elephant. Presently, South Sudan is a disaster, nothing to boast about. The self-serving statements reflect how entitled he believes he is to the leadership.

Probably he would do better as an adviser but as potential leader of the country, his present dull, insipid , uninspiring captainship gives one pause.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 8 Thumb down 10
