Dr Thomson Fontaine urges youth not to ‘waste their lives’ on violence

Political leader of the UWP Dr Thomson Fontaine

Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Dr Thomson Fontaine has sent a strong appeal to the young people in Dominica, particularly the “young men” to solve conflict in a peaceful and amicable manner.

His appeal came while speaking on State-Owned Radio DBS, in reference to the number of violent crimes recorded on the island in recent times.

“I would like to make a very strong appeal to our young people, in particular to our young men, not to waste their lives away,” he said. “I mean, this level of violence that we are seeing is really not called for.”

According to Dr. Fontaine, he believes that there are better ways that people can settle their differences and issues with each other.

“And I would really urge the young people in particular to bring in their illegal weapons and let us instead come together and talk through and work through these problems we are having,’ he urged. “It is not a good thing when a country the size of Dominica has this level of violence. Too many families are impacted, too many people are impacted beyond just the people who are involved in the violence.”

He continued, “So I would really like to make a very strong appeal, I would like to add my voice to that of the many other voices out there that has been calling for our young people to just be more patience with each other, loving towards each other and let this new year be a part of something different where we can approach our issues and our differences and our problems in a different manner. There are ways to settle those differences.”

Dr. Fontaine added, “They can be done in a peaceful and amicable manner. Let us come and talk, let us discuss instead of fighting each other.”

There were over 20 reported homicides in Dominica in 2025, with a significant rise in violence using firearms.

When our current government sees it fit to jail the opposition for practicing their Democratic rights and allegedly bringing in foreigners to frame those fighting what they perceive as being corruption what do we expect. The monkey see, monkey do mentality has taken hold of our population and we have no one but the CURRENT Cabal to blame.

It is even ALLEGED that the motor cycles we see running around the Zone Rouge area in the city were purchased by certain POLITICIANS with illicit money to replicate what Maduro has in Venezuela. So you see, what we really need is a change of governance to start the overhaul of the system/ process. DLP has to go like yesterday for there to be any meaningful change in Dca. But, I hear your plea sir…..

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 7 Thumb down 17
