The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force (CDPF) has announced that residents of the northern communities may now obtain driver’s licences in Portsmouth.
According to a statement from the CDPF, Chief of Police Mr. Lincoln Corbette made this announcement during the service’s official launch on Thursday, March 19, 2026. Four officers have been appointed as Licensing Officers to facilitate the process and improve accessibility for the public.
The Chief of Police also emphasized that vigilance and surveillance will be strengthened to ensure that motorists remain compliant by keeping their driver’s licences and insurance up to date. Motorists are being urged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and properly documented at all times.
Additionally, the statement said a warning was issued that vehicles owing licence fees for more than two years may be deregistered.
“The Police Force remains committed to improving public service delivery while promoting road safety and lawful compliance across the island,” the statement added.
What is this!? 1976?
Why is the CDPF still issuing driver’s licenses? The police is a law enforcement agency. Thats it. They should be driving around ensuring that the traffic laws are being followed.
With all these cars on the road, we need a full time “Department of Transport.” Tasked with TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT (design and implementation of new roads, traffic flow, regulations/laws, signage, registration of vehicles, licensing of drivers, roadway maintenance ).
And Roseau and Portsmouth locations are not enough. We need AT LEAST FOUR(4) scattered around the country.
May I suggest we divide the country into the Parishes for the purposes of decentralizing government services. Like they do in Antigua, Barbados and Jamaica. Obviously, initially services will not be available in all parishes. But gradually as we continue to grow and demand dictates.
We always hear rhetoric of taking Dominica to the “next level.” But our government still operate like it did 50 years ago
You are right. No one wants to rock the boat or question how things are done. Even those in authority. Current responsible persons want to hold on to that power. Government is not concerned about being efficient or even whether bygone rules established 50 years ago even make sense. Lets not even use the word modernization. Some requirements even defy logic. For example, if a passport validates the birthday of a person since a birth certificate was already provided to allow the passport to be issued, why is it that government transactions will reject a passport as validation for birthdate? And why is it that a passport renewal still requires a birth certificate and the exact same form, recommendation signatures inluded, just as if you were applying for the first time? No one sees these things as unreasonable and unnecessary? Why cant you pay for the license at the same location through a bank or credit card processing terminal? Yes, we don’t mind keeping things exactly as they were.
Support you views/ recommendations 100000000000%.
While at it we should do the same thing with constituencies for parliament/ representation. Only 10 Constituencies and ammend laws to empower village councils to undertake local development while reporting to the Constituency head/ representative.
And make the Police Commissioner answerable to the President instead of the prime minister.
Dca is caught in Lala Land.
