DSWMC urges citizens and commercial businesses to manage waste properly

The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) continues to urge all citizens and commercial businesses to manage their waste properly.

According to a statement via the DSWMC Facebook Page, the corporation emphasizes that “everyone has a role to play in keeping the country clean and healthy.”

“The DSWMC states that improperly managed garbage leads to a number of health and environmental issues. Piles of uncollected waste attract rodents, which can spread diseases and create unsanitary conditions,” the statement said. “Effective waste management is essential for protecting the health and well-being of the entire population.”

Additionally, the statement went on to add that the corporation cannot manage waste alone.

“The responsibility for a clean Dominica falls on every individual and business,” the statement said.

The DSWMC is calling on the public to take action by:

Disposing of garbage correctly: Place your household waste out for collection only on the designated days and times for your area. This ensures a smooth and efficient collection process.

Contacting the corporation for commercial pickup: Commercial entities that do not have their own hauler must contact the DSWMC to arrange for waste collection. This prevents illegal dumping and ensures commercial waste is disposed of safely.

The DSWMC warns that those who continue to disregard the proper waste management regulations will face legal consequences.

The management told the public that following these simple steps will help the corporation maintain a “clean and healthy environment for everyone in Dominica.”

The place looks so bad with just outside on the road without any bins. Unfortunately the government completely changed our garbage collection system without a proper education campaign. It will continue to be struggle until they make an actual plan to change people’s mindset.

Have been thinking why the Government has the sole responsibility and exclusively accountable for garbage collection and disposal, for the whole Country, such system cannot be sustainable which comes with a cost, and we are just seeing the result, it has become a very expensive burden on the Government coffers to provide such service, and begs the question are Dominicans willing to contribute their fair share for such service and comply with the authorities’ system of collection and disposal. This is not a problem endemic to Dominica. We are in an era of consumerism which has never been seem before, and this has added to the problem.

This is a complex problem, where are the entrepreneurs there may be a need for private service, time for the Commercial entities to have their own haulers, just like the Public transportation is not centralized with the Government. Now, this is not in any way absorbing the Government from their responsibility in keeping the Country clean.

The problem is there is NO FIXED DATE OR TIME.
The schedule is now just when the truck turns up. There is a certain amount of garbage that can be kept home. Beyond that it attracts rats and consequently poses a risk to ones life.

Designated times, hmm even after you all get dem new trucks they still took over a week to collect the same garbage the should be picked up everyweek.

As for Roseau around the corner near Mega Plus always have a pile of rubbish the bin cover there, but no bin yet people dumping rubbish dere
