Chairperson of the Road Parade Committee, Charlene White-Christian revealed that the electronic bands will be out to perform earlier for Jouvert this year.
She was delivering remarks during the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) Carnival Press Conference held on Thursday.
Jouvert begins at 4:00 AM on Carnival Monday, (March, 3) and will end at 10:00 AM.
“This year we are allowing the electronic bands to come out earlier, because they were given numbers in order to ensure that there is a smooth parade and Jouvert,” she said. “We know the number of persons who follow those bands…”
She continued, “We want to ensure that everyone is comfortable and we have enough space on our streets in Roseau, so our electronic bands will be coming out from 6:30 AM this year.”
White-Christian added, “As as soon as jouvert ends at 10:00 AM we would like our streets to look beautiful for our young people [primary and secondary school students] who are coming out at 11:00 AM [and] at 11:00 AM there will be the Youth Mas.”
According to her, the Old Mas Parade will also take place at 11:00 AM. The beginning points for the parade are from Kennedy Avenue onto Independence Street.
This she said will be followed by the T-Shirt Bands from 1:00 PM.
Moreover, she stated that Carnival Tuesday (March 4) will begin at 10:00 AM with the winners’ parade, contestants from various pageants followed by the costume bands from 11:00 AM.
“And as usual this year we have our categories, our traditional costume bands, those are what we call our theme bands, so they dress based on a theme and we also have our contemporary bands which are our lovely feature and sexy bands,” White-Christian explained.
She encouraged all participating in the mascarade to embody the spirit of togetherness and understanding.
“We are hoping that those [who] have registered in the various bands to try your best to be at your starting point at the time given by your group leader because judging starts very early for both Monday and Tuesday,” White-Christian noted.
Patrons are also reminded that there will be two stilt walking groups, “and safety for us is key for those stilt walking groups.”
She warns that the music system/ speakers should be no more than 13 feet from your platform and band leaders are reminded to have at least two fire extinguishers in their possession.
“The maximum number of persons allowed at the top of the truck is 10, which includes the two linesmen,” White- Christian indicated.
The curtains will come down on both days at 10:00 PM.
