Eastern Caribbean High Court Judge charged with assault

Justice Shawn Innocent

Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) Justice Shawn Innocent, who is currently assigned to the Criminal Division in Grenada, was formally charged on April 28, 2025, with the indictable offence of “assault with a deadly instrument.” According to a press statement by the ECSC, this is contrary to section 176(e) of the Grenadian Criminal Code.

Justice Innocent was granted bail following the charge and is scheduled to appear in court to respond to the allegations. As the legal proceedings unfold, the ECSC indicated that it has taken immediate steps to address the situation.

In accordance with judicial protocols, Justice Innocent has been temporarily de-rostered from his duties, with another judge being assigned to assume Justice Innocent’s responsibilities in the Criminal Court, effective June 1, 2025.

The ECSC emphasizes that it approaches this matter with the utmost seriousness, balancing the respect for Justice Innocent’s fundamental rights under the Constitution with its unwavering commitment to maintaining the rule of law with its “dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the integrity of the judiciary.”

This is what happens when a Society turns away from God and families stop going to Church.

It seems inevitable that the system of things are beginning to change on some islands of the Caribbean, indeed for the better!
There was a time when such alleged crimes perpetrated by a member of the judiciary would be buried even if the public was aware.
Hopefully the time will come when that type of justice will be rendered in Dominica!
There are many in Dominica, especially in political circles who believe they are above the law, and cannot be held accountable; nevertheless, it appears that a change is inevitable!

Moral decadence has infiltrated the whole of our society. All of our once revered systems and institutions – parliament, court of justice, law enforcement, civil service have been ethically and morally discolored and corroded.

It’s no surprise that living has become so insufferable as honesty, empathy, integrity, humility, generosity, morality, affinity are no longer regarded as an essential part of the moral fabric of our society.

Justice Shawn Innocent is not so innocent as he looks. I have always insisted that the judiciary in the region is a corrupt system. It’s no longer an arbiter of justice. I’m plain-spoken and unpretentious and speak the unvarnished truth.

This does not surprised me. One bad apple spoils the whole bunch. The justice system needs to be purged of many more Shawn Innocents.

I think the first duty of society is justice. Therefore, it is imperative that persons of impeccable moral persuasion and integrity are chosen to man our justice systems.
