The British Virgin Islands (BVI) and the Dominican Republic (DR) have reiterated the significance of the Greater Caribbean region’s economy as it strives to enhance its economic vitality and resilience. A press release from the BVI government stated that Premier Dr. Hon. Natalio D. Wheatley and DR Vice Minister for Cooperation Hon. Hugo Rivera discussed the benefits of increased trade among Caribbean nations and emphasized the importance of strengthening connectivity between their economies to facilitate this process. They also underscored the necessity for closer collaboration on air and sea transportation to maximize the region’s economic potential and productivity.
Regarding their bilateral economic relationship, the press release said that the leaders examined their respective tourism industries and the potential for cooperative efforts that could bring mutual advantages. Both agreed that their teams will continue discussions on sectors of cooperation in preparation for a BVI trade mission scheduled in the upcoming weeks.
Commenting on the bilateral talks, Premier Wheatley stated, “The British Virgin Islands as a fellow member of the Association of Caribbean States family, shares the view of the Dominican Republic and Member States of the regional organisation that the Greater Caribbean has untapped economic potential that can be unlocked through closer regional
cooperation.
“At bilateral level, the BVI and DR continue to explore the sectors where we can work together for mutual economic benefit. In addition to the sectors already identified in previous BVI-DR exchanges, tourism and sea and air transport are important sectors where cooperation could add tremendous value. The BVI will remain engaged with the DR as arrangements are made for a trade mission in the very near future,” he continued.
Earlier, Premier Wheatley and Vice Minister Rivera met during the 10th Summit of the Heads of Government and/or State held in Cartagena, Colombia.
