Education index shows UWI has risen in global ranking

In early 2026, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) celebrated a remarkable milestone.

According to Times Higher Education (THE), the global leader in university rankings, the institution has made notable progress among over 33,000 universities and degree-granting colleges worldwide.

The UWI reports that in the final standings for the 2025-2026 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which evaluate universities based on teaching quality, research output, knowledge transfer, and international engagement, only 2,191 institutions from 115 countries earned a spot in the rankings.

According to a press release, the school continues to advance in this competitive landscape, as the total number of universities increases each year. It is recognized annually based on its academic excellence and currently ranks within the top 3.6% of all evaluated institutions.

“We continue to adhere steadfastly to our strategic plan, which has proven to be an expert guide that keeps us focused on building out our intellectual productivity, scholastic brand, and global partnership profile. The results merely
indicate the output of our considerable collective input,” emphasized Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.

UWI notes that since last year, there has been a noticeable improvement in the quality of research produced by its scholars, leading to greater recognition and influence of their publications and academic presentations. Additionally, the university’s international profile has expanded, as reflected in scholarly impact, international collaborations, and membership in prestigious global networks.

Its influence on regional and worldwide research initiatives—through projects and publications—has also contributed to its rising position in the rankings.

“These considerable achievements serve to demonstrate the impact of the University’s expert leadership on the world stage,” said the release.

The university’s work spans critical areas such as climate change, public health, arts and cultural narratives, economic development, and social justice, consistently making a substantial mark “well beyond its fiscal and financial constraints.”

“I am very proud of this intergenerational achievement, as we look to The UWI’s centenary in 2048,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

Times Higher Education has listed Oxford University in England in top place for the tenth year in a row based on its “strong research environment score”.

Before I say congrats to UWI, can Dr. Kemon Joseph or Dr. barry Casimir tell us UWI actual position in the ranking? all well and good to say UWI rank in the top 3.6%. An actual number placement would be helpful. THE, the same ranking agency ranks UWI between 1201-1500. Years ago UWI was consistently ranked 501-600, which represented the top 1.5% of Universities worldwide!! STOP MISLEADING THE PUBLIC!! UWI!!!

Well-loved. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0
