The Cuban Government has awarded eleven (11) students with scholarships to pursue studies in Cuba.
A special award ceremony was held at the University of the West Indies (UWI) auditorium in Bath Estate this week.
Cuban Ambassador to Dominica, His Excellency Miguel Manuel Fraga Gonzalez said that the educational cooperation between Cuba and Dominica is historic, going back to 1979, before forming bilateral diplomatic relations. “Over 400 Dominican students have graduated from Cuba, more than 400, from Cuban institutions in raising their own lives and contributing to their nation’s development,” he said. “Some may wonder how two small nations, both with limited resources, can achieve so much together. The answer lies in our shared solidarity.”
He continued, “Eleven new students are joining that legacy. Future graduates who, thanks to their dedication and effort, will return as qualified professionals. We gathered together today to formally present them with the official documentation, recognizing them as recipients of the scholarship to pursue their university studies in Cuba.”
According to him, among the students, six will become doctors. A statement by the Cuban embassy also confirmed that the nine undergraduate and two postgraduate students will study in key areas such including Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Dentistry.
In the meantime, Acting Minister for Education, Fenella Wenham-Sheppard, said the Dominican government is steadfast in its commitment to demolishing the barriers to higher education due to financial constraints.
“As we continue to look at education reform, both here and abroad, it is clear that partnerships like this one we share with Cuba remind us of the power of access, equity, and opportunity in shaping strong societies,” she stated. “These scholarships are far more than financial aid. They are part of a broader vision to build a more educated, equitable, and empowered society.”
Wenham-Sheppard urged the scholarship awardees to embrace this journey with discipline, humility, and gratitude.
“Remember that this scholarship is more than a personal achievement. It is a call to service,” she stated.
I would first like to congratulate these students but at the same time I am very concerned about them because upon completing their studies I have not seen too many of them coming home with an independent mind of their own to help build Dominica . Worse of all I want to warn them not to comeback behaving like empty brain Clarence , who returned from university worse than when he left Da.
Congratulation to all.
Young & Restless,another UWP idiot.
i intended to try my luck to see if i would get a scholarship to attend univerty somewhere but gason, after listening to talk on the block today on q95 , and a feller called to say when Ms Mia Motley came to Dominica and warned Dominicans against if leaders did certain things they would be sending their citizens to suck salt and that Christian brother said Ms Mia was a univerty lecturer making general statemenrs to her univerty students and that man had the audacity to say that he is a University graduwaste, boy I changed my mind right away because if University education has to make us so backwrd thinking i prefer to stay as i am
Congratulations to our students, I wish you much success in your studies. Cuba will always be one of our best friends. Mèsi sé kanmawad! 🇩🇲🇨🇺
