Fire officers to receive bonus for handling of major Roseau blaze

Minister for National Security Rayburn Blackmoore handing over of new fire trucks

Minister for National Security Rayburn Blackmoore announced a $500 cash incentive for fire officers who braved a major fire that broke out in the early hours of Monday morning on King George IV Street in Roseau.

Blackmoore made the announcement during this week’s handover ceremony of two trucks to the fire department.

The fire damaged several businesses and forced the closure of one of the country’s leading pharmacies.

“I salute the fire officers I saw, three women equally active and equally efficient and competent as the men, and for that I am endlessly pleased,” he said. “The men and women had to brave the element; they were professional, they were quick on their feet, and what I saw gives me greater appreciation and admiration for their service to country.”

Blackmoore continued, “In that regard, although I am aware that you took the decision on your own without inducement and force to declare that you are committed to serving the Government of this country and the people of this country by way of being a fire officer, but I believe when people have demonstrated that level of bravery and commitment to the people of this country we have to give them some incentive beyond the salary they are getting.”

And to the other fire officers who were present and involved in curtailing, managing, and extinguishing this fire, Blackmoore emphasized, “Every one of you will be getting a cash incentive, and it will not be less than $500.”

According to him, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has given his approval, because the Government of Dominica is committed to recognizing people for their hard work and commitment to country.

we feel good to see dem in action doing what they are trained to do.
I hope you not trying to take credit in their efforts.
On the other hand …………the truth is, our citizens does really sweat it out in this economy
It would appear to your leader and all you party heads that life so sweet for de average citizen
you actually pick who gets a bonus in private for the votes to count in your favor
it pays to make de government look good right
Fire officers go out there to do their job honestly with valor
De minister of security is leading a move to give dem some extra incentive while de service itself is numb……….most likely because they are unable to pay dem extra for their duties.
instead of looking for praise perhaps your government could have encouraged and supported the service itself to make that incentive available to it’s honorable servicemen in the line of duty and valor

good afternoon . very pleased to hear from the Honorable minister, offering incentives to these heroic fire officers. I think it is most deserving, but should we not be offering a more realistic monthly salary, better working conditions, better accommodation and most of better training and equipment and sound professional leadership?
i also hope that we are not setting a precedent that all members of the public service who give of their best in all catastrophic situations performing the jobs that they are trained to do, will be deserving off such an incentive. Nurses, police officers, civil servants, forestry personnel and the like. i pray that this is not politically motivated

I thought the very same thing. Pay these essential workers a livable monthly salary. Provide or create a stimulating working environment.

Good work conditions empower workers to contribute their best.

      my thoughts exactly
some individuals could easily relate this monetary incentive to purchasing support.
if they really deserve it make it official through proper salary negotiation.
their efforts should be properly awarded and recorded

when talk comes out they are already exposed
Dominica could have been a full proudly exposed dictatorship already if it was not for some real hard back patriotic sons and daughters
