First-ever swimmer to represent Dominica at Commonwealth Games sets personal best but fails to advance in first two events

Warren Lawrence the son of Olympic swimmer Woodrow “Woody” Lawrence today created history for Dominica at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games by becoming the first ever swimmer to represent this country at the Commonwealth Games.

Lawrence finished in 7th place in heat number 3 of the Men’s 50-meter butterfly event. He swam 26.19 seconds in the event. The event was won by Collins Saliboko in a time of 25.52 seconds.

Lawrence also attained 3rd place finish for Dominica in heat number 2 of the men’s 100-meter backstroke event in a time of 1:00:13 seconds.

The race was won by Keenan Dols of Jamaica in a time of 57.80 seconds; Bede Aitu was second in a time of 59.77 seconds.

Despite the 3rd place finish warren won’t qualify for the semifinals. However he has set a new personal best time at the Commonwealth Games.

In an interview with media liaison for the Dominica team, Gavin Richards, Lawrence expressed disappointment in his performance and said that he plans to improve his training.

“I am definitely going to talk to my coach to see how I can fix my training to fit my needs,” he stated.

He will compete in another race on Sunday which is the men’s 100-meter back stroke event.

Eleven (11) athletes and seven (7) officials and support staff, competing in Swimming, Cycling and Athletics are representing Dominica at the Commonwealth Games.

Hmm, I think it fair to ask though if he would be in the Dominica squad if he was not the son of Woody. We do not have a record in swimming like this and Warren only beat his own best. Be fair that is not much to go on and I really hope he will improve. Good luck young man

You that little nobody; to the day you die like a dog in the streets you will crave Mama land! Return what land to mama Children; my grandmother was born 1890; her mother was the prior owner of the land died before she could finish paying for it.

Dominica was then in the Leeward islands, my grand mother paid for that bit of land, and gave it to me her favorite grandson. I don’t know what children you talking about; as far as I know my grandmother had one child, by the name of Yvonne Dods (Dodds), whom had five six children, all nor five are dead, I the one my grand mother called Mama-son is yet alive.

When my grandmother turn 72 years old in 1962, I stop her from farming, I took care of her until she died at age 103, the money I sent to her you all little puppies lived of it as parasites.

I don’t know who you are, but if you are related to me; I can tell now I don’t like you, and if I ever return to Dominica stay away from me, cause I may take you out cold!

Admin: am asking you to tolerate this one; so that I can put that idiot believe to me one of my nephews or nieces in their place! You see, in Dominica when most people are old and need help very few of their family puts themselves out to help.
I am not like that; I took care of my grandmother, my mother to the day they die.
The last person I took care of is my sister died in November, last year; hurricane blew away her house, her daughter Jacklyn residing in Antigua asks all her children to give what they can to help put a roof over her head; they all refuse, saying when house build I and my children will leave America, go to Dominica, and sell house and land!
Now; in 2020, I took my money and build a house for my sister on my land; now she is dead everybody claiming the house; want keys for the house, the only person help me with a few dollars, and I allowed her is Jacklyn.
The last I heard my nephew said; if he in-charge of land he would brow money from bank and don’t pay.

      July 31, 2022

So, let me tell you again that damn little dog; if you want land and you don’t want to work to by land, go and thief let them put you behind in jail!
You should make Hansey (Alfred Destouche) your example, he is my nephew too, when he was a kid, he fell off my cousin Emlord truck.
He sustained some damage to his; I believe left Rotator Cuff his mother nor farther could afford to send him to the University Hospital in Jamaica, for treatment; that happened in the 1960’s; hence the entire arm withered; nevertheless; he was able to work and buy almost an acre of land near Londonderry.
He’s completely illiterate; some organization gave him a box, said it’s a house, I allow him to put it on my land; last month I gave DOMLEC permission to install electrical service for him.
If a one arm man can be that ambitious; why can’t you?
You looking for something free; the only I am prepared to help as long as I live are Jacklyn, and Alfred, the rest of you, God have mercy on you all!

      Go…

“Woody” Lawrence today created history for Dominica”
    Somebody has to be joking!
I don’t see a man indulging into something and failed miserably can be considered history!
If he won a medal, by chance that would be history!

As for this name here “Warren Lawrence:” I doubt anybody in Dominica heard this name prior to reading it on DNO; our people tends to always make a joke out of our country. Because a parent done something does not empower his progeny’s to be good at it without training!

From a young boy, to living in me old age!
I’ve never seen an Olympic or heard of an Olympic size swimming pool in Dominica, and surly no natter how much time one spends in the supposedly three hundred sixty-five rivers flowing into the sea, in Dominica in addition to the feeder rivers and streams, swimming them all cannot prepare one to participate in Olympic competition!
That is similar to the Jamaican Bob-sledge team to the Olympics, when it does not Snow in…

I feel you on this one. I too had never heard the name Warren Lawrence until today. I think ADMIN should do a follow up story on this one. Provide details like where Mr. Lawrence resides and trains etc. And also, how does one meet the qualifying conditions for the games, and in particular to represent Dominica.

On another note, maybe the Olympic size swimming pool is one of our lakes or the good old Caribbean Sea

You come back again with your negativity and insults. I hope you don’t get offended when you are given the same treatment. Can’t you understand English. It clearly stated that he did not win but he surpassed his personal best and is the first Dominican to swim for Dominica at the commonwealth games. Even the first man to die in a war is immortalized in history as the first one to die in a particular war. You are so pathetic. You behave like a failure who gets hurt by other success.

        Thank you!
You see our people are as such they do not live in reality!
We fall and glory in any crap pertaining to Dominica; we are supposed to be the best in everything; while we fail in everything and refuse to recognized our failures and backwardness.
It would be good to have people, boxers, swimmers, track and field, and all of the existing Olympics sports representation in the games.

Nevertheless, the athletes must be trained!

Just because someone lives in another country, or out of Dominica, don’t qualify them to do something, because the say they can!

His father was a failure too!

I researched; only to find this:

“Woodrow Lawrence, also popularly known as Woody, was a swimmer at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta for his country of birth Dominica. Woody finished 60th out of 63 competitors in 50 meter freestyle, with a time of 27.88” minuets I suppose; at least that could not be in seconds!
I doh care who insults me oui!

So instead of your negativity and sacarsm then why don’t you contribute the Olimpic size and style of swimming pool for those Dominicans who wish to practice to become international competitors tomorrow? On another note, how many international competitions have you ever been into to represent Dominica.? And yes he made history and made positive thinking Dominicans proud by reaching so far in spite he didn’t win. Oh please!!!! It is people like you who go about looking to drag our country down and discourage our artists and entrepreneurs instead of trying to help our nation. Am am expecting an apology to from you to all Dominicans on a whole for your dangerous and negative speech towards us on DNO.

This is the most stupid response to give when people genuinely seek for additional information.

The government should use the resources of the state (CBI funds) to provide the necessary sporting facilities for its people. They use these resources to go country hopping, quite frequently, all over the globe.

Not every citizen excels in sports but their make valuable contributions in other spheres of life (medicine, education, economics, etc).

Every Dominican has a right to question this man’s credentials and suitability. You should ask questions to be made wise.

Dominica must not be a nation of sheep. This is the reason corrupt politicians live large while the masses barely exist. They are too trusting and hardly question anything.

So, let me split your head open right now! Why don’t you tell Roosevelt Skerrit, the billions of dollars belonging to the treasury of Dominica, they have in the name of foreigners in overseas bank, which Dominica will never see!
Why don’t you tell Roosevelt to get it and build the Olympic size pool to serve our aspiring athletes.

Why don’t you tell Roosevelt Skerrit the twenty plus millions of dollars he has given to foreigners as pocket money in addition to the millions he gave to them to build guess houses and call them hotels; why he didn’t use it to build an Olympic training center with all the training facilities to prepare for international competition?
Why don’t you build the same pool you want me to contribute to building?
Get rid of Roosevelt then I will contribute!

But, remember they are not Dominica born; they are bought citizens of Dominica; they become citizens of Dominica, by buying a Dominica passport.
True representation should come from a “Dominica born and bread.”

Anyway in this case I am just been a bit prejudice; people do represent countries in which they are not born.

I think rather then sending athletes, to compete in the name of Dominica, if our country need to compete, we should set up the conditions to prepare athletes for such competition. Cycling too is a waste of time; Olympic cycling is not simple riding a bicycle up hills and mountains!

They do that on tracks in the Olympics.

          August 2, 2022

Francisco, I must correct you there. Cycling also takes place on the road, public roads incl. the Olympic Games and those Commonwealth games too. Don’t forget the biggest and toughest road race of all, the Tour de France. Man, that is truly epic.

          • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
            August 3, 2022

Well, I am accustom to the Tour de France, and in other European countries; that is all professional cycling, they also have the same meets here in the United States.

I am sure you are accustom to the yellow jersey worn by the leader; not worn in the Olympics.

Critical as one may think I am; I simply would like to see the best out of Dominica, where we talk a pile of garbage; whereas garbage talk, and our dragging accent will not cause us to be successful.

In international sports, or any sort competitive sports, performance; the ability to perform is what matters; if you do not have the training facilities; it all boils down to a waste of time.
Indeed we saw a Grenada boy (a Grenadian) took home a gold medal a few years ago; did he win by chance?
When he tried again he was not successful, or did he win the bronze: I am not quite sure.

You do not have to be so negative but can encourage the young man who though hurt but wants to succeed at what he does. Isn’t this something that you should applaud?

Francisco look internally. Stop stressing yourself politically – because your choice of party is not in power (This is your choice but you taking that thing too serious). This has turned you bitter. Please get better – away with pride, arrogance, and being sarcastic, wheel, and come again. Start afresh, humble yourself. Are you crazy?
Do I look, sound or appear to be one stressing, over anything in Dominica, politics, or otherwise?

Let me tell you something I have long given up on the place of my birth, it is even worst now that all my parents and siblings by my mother and grandmother are dead!
All my uncles, and aunts are dead, I am the only one left alive; save a few brothers and sisters by my father.

They are so many, I only recognize Izine, Bernie, Watts, and one named Haig!

The others scattered wherever my father left them.

So, my progeny’s daughters and Son, I can see everyday if I wish except one in England, I have never met; they told me he is in his 40’s. Don’t blame me before he was born his mother propose adaption okay!

I am a happy man; want of nothing; hence stress has absolutely no effect on me, even during the worst moments of my life!

Francisco, you are too tough on the swimmer. He did the best he could do despite the lack of adequate swimming facilities.

For Dominicans to win any sporting competition on the international stage is nothing short of a miracle. In Dominica inadequacy, shortage, insufficiency, limited, restrictive, have currency.

Now that kid, the young lady, the long jumper, I am her fan; she almost bring home goal; failed to make it into the last event, but that sometimes happens to the best.
I am going to say something, that is going to offend many!

But in this case the saying “like father like son.” De man father competed years ago finished number sixty (60) out of the sixty-three (63) swimmers oui!
