A study that looked into the mercury contamination in seafood from the Caribbean has revealed that fish taken from Dominican waters is the best in the region because of low levels of the deadly substance.
The study analyzed over 1,600 samples of seafood between 2005 and 2023 and it showed variations of mercury continuation across the region.
Dr Linroy Christian, Director of the Department of Analytical Services (DAS) at the Ministry of Agriculture in Antigua, said fish from Dominica is the best in the region because of the low level of mercury detected.
“If you look from Dominica to Honduras, it went from lowest to highest,” he said. “Dominica, the fish from Dominica probably are the best of the bunch. Antigua is almost middle way, and the fish from Honduras and Guatemala, the fish from the South American shelf and Central America tested the worst.”
He also said the samples tested were generally good but there was cause for concern.
“The good thing is that 55 percent of the samples tested well within a very good guideline,” he remarked. “However, 26 percent exceeded the 0.46 microgram-per-gram guideline as a choice to avoid and consistent with adverse health effects. So almost a third of the samples are at a level that you should avoid eating them due to the higher risk of adverse human health effects.”
According to the website, WebMD, nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of mercury.
“For most people, the risk from mercury by eating fish and shellfish is not a health concern,” it said.
“Yet some fish and shellfish contain higher levels of mercury that may harm an unborn baby or young child’s developing nervous system. The risks from mercury in fish and shellfish depend on the amount of fish and shellfish eaten and the levels of mercury in the fish and shellfish. Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are advising young children and people who may become pregnant, are pregnant, or are nursing to avoid some types of fish and eat fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.”
“Some species may be a problem for you to consume more than two or three times a week,” Dr Christian warned.
l caught a Dominican 🐟 🐠 🎣 🐡 🍥 Dominica 🇩🇲 fish is the Best 👌 now it’s out there. Come to Dominca, Eat fish, live long a new Slogan. secure the Rights to this slogan!
That’s simply another of the propaganda, that everything pertaining to Dominica is bigger, and better than what’s found in other places on earth!
For one to claim that fish in Dominica is better than fish in the inmate region is total nonsense, rubbish: that would be suggesting that the fish in question are hatched in the waters of Dominica and never venture out of Dominica territorial waters.
So, one may asks how far is Martinique St. Vincent, St. Lucia, to the South of Dominica, and how far is Gaudaloupe, the Saint, Marigallante to the North of Dominica?
Let me say they are in very close proximity, close enough for fish to swim into the waters surrounding all the islands identified!
As usual, we could not missed another opportunity to have the best fish in world, nevertheless, fish is one of the most scarce commodity in Dominica, in comparison to any other country that one can point a finger towards.
I would not swallow that theory with an ounce of salt to save my life!
Were these tests done on fish that stay year round on our reefs and coast? or were these test done on migratory species? how does the mercury content on these two vary and what are the predominant species caught and consumed? I know folks would dive from woodforhill and end up anse de Mai do spare fishing and also know those who would go out in the channel and fish. Which of the two were sampled? just asking because some of us are interested in the scientific approach used to judge the credibility of the results and not just what we are told. please provide link to research report. I would also assume that tissue samples taken in other parts of the Caribbean are non migratory?
additionally why not provide a list of fish with highest mercury content so vulnerable population can avoid.
it is saying a third of the samples were above the 0.46 ug/l, the threshold that is dangerous to cosume. Was that from a Particular species or just the overall sample size? Again was that from migratory species or from the endemic species. Obviously no one test fish fro. the fisherman so what good is his info if it is not equipping market to make wise choices on thier health and the fisherman to not waste time an energy on less desirable catch. I hope the intent of this was to highlight a serious problem an fi d a solution and not just to say there is a serious problem but others are worst than us but it’s ok. according to epa.gov the highest allowable avg mercury conc. in fish per serving wen we eat 3 servings per week is 0.15 ug/g (microgram/gram). Who is checking that?

Look as fish caught in Dominica waters are the best.Look as is telling us fish caught in Anse De Mai is not caught in Dominican waters,as if Dominica does not have waters in the Atlantic ocean.Typical UWP.Waiting for,Ibo,MEME,me and the other UWP illeterate, blue do nothing puppets to say Dr. Linroy Christian was paid by Skerrit.CONGRATULATION DOMINICA.
