Flood warning issued for Eastern Dominica, flood watch in effect for the West (with video)

The Dominica Meteorological Service has issued a flood warning for eastern communities and a flood watch for western areas, both valid until 2 p.m. today, Sunday, April 26, 2026. Information from the Dominica Meteorological Services explained that showers are expected to continue, urging residents in the flood warning zone to exercise extreme caution and those in the flood watch zone to remain on alert, noting that the watch for the west may be upgraded to a warning.

Heavy rainfall has already impacted the island, with over three inches recorded in northeastern to southeastern communities, causing flooding in the east. Meanwhile, about one inch of rainfall has been observed from northwestern to southwestern communities on the west coast. Additional rainfall of one to two inches is forecast during the morning, raising the risk of overflowing rivers, ravines, and waterways, as well as flooding of roadways and low-lying bridges. Landslides, falling rocks, and increased turbidity of rivers and streams are also expected.

Earlier advisories issued at 6:00 a.m. reported that a moist southeasterly wind flow was moving across the island, producing cloudy skies, moderate to heavy showers, and possible isolated thunderstorms. Residents in flood-prone areas were urged to remain vigilant. Sea conditions were also highlighted, with wave heights forecast to reach seven feet along the eastern coast and three feet along the western coast. Ground swells are expected to increase along the western coastline during the afternoon, prompting warnings for small-craft operators and sea-bathers to remain cautious.

The situation continues to be closely monitored, with updates expected as conditions evolve.
