Fond Cole Landfill fire ‘partially contained’ says DSWMC PRO

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) Rhoda St John has announced that as of 6:00 AM today the fire that started at the Fond Cole Landfill yesterday has been “partially contained”.

“It is not likely to spread, however, there will be some burning still taking place,” she revealed.

St John thanked CR5 and the Office of Disaster Management for assisting the DSWMC with water trucks as well as the fire service, and ADA Trucking who left the landfill at 5:00 AM this morning.

“The efforts to completely distinguish the fire will continue at 8:00 AM today,” she stated.

The DSWMC admonishes the general public, especially the neighbouring communities, to continue to exercise caution.

Furthermore, the corporation expresses its apologies and concerns for the persons affected by the fumes from the fire which occurred at the sanitary landfill.

“This hazard was a suspicious occurrence which we have been working to extinguish since the early hours of the afternoon,” St John revealed.

She continued, “Following the recommendation of the fire service we wish to advise any resident of the surrounding communities being affected, especially those with respiratory illnesses to vacate the area if possible…”

Meanwhile, the Fond Cole Landfill remains closed until further notice.

The reason it catches fire is becaise it has outgrown its original construction capacity several times over. You cannot just bury garbages – landfill sites are especially constructed to safely manage combustible gases and toxic sludge. The site needs urgent reinvestment. If not, it will keep happening – and considering we claim to be the nature isle, this should be a priority. In fact, it should have been a priority several years ago.

Yes, the landfill should be abandoned. It has long outlived its usefulness. A new site is urgently needed. The country is crumbling from neglect – roads, public buildings, now even the landfill too.

This Roosevelt-led kakistocracy wins elections by fraudulent means but they can’t govern. Roosevelt has invisible chains dragging the country to Hell.

For the good of the populace that has fallen victims to the toxic smoke, I hope the fire would be completely extinguished ASSP.

Everything in this country is grossly mismanaged by the were that be. Dominicans will pay wth their health for repeatedly installing a most incompetent, uncaring ad utterly corrupt concoction of dimwits and bandits in government.

    Who can’t hear will feel.
