The Forestry and Wildlife Division is set to host an exciting week-long series of activities for ‘Forest Week 2024’ in observance of International Forest Day.
The activity is scheduled to take place from March 18 to the 22.
March 21, is designated by the United Nations (UN) as the annual International Forest Day.
“Forest Week really aims to raise local awareness and understanding of Dominica’s forests and protected areas and our incredible biodiversity,” Director of the Forestry Division Minchinton Burton said while addressing a press conference held recently.
He mentioned that this week of activities is also part of a larger program that leverages ecotourism for biodiversity projects, supported by the World Bank in the sum of US$3.5 million.
According to him, the event will include an official launch on March 18, an exhibition, followed by a West Coast cleanup, a tree planting activity, a high-level roundtable discussion on March 21, and an awards ceremony to culminate the week of activities.
Burton indicated that the highlight of the week of activities is a multi-stakeholder roundtable discussion to be held on the 21st at the State House Conference Center where local beneficiaries, stakeholders, and international partners will exchange experiences and discuss priorities for improving forestry management in Dominica.
“Dominica Forest Week seeks to strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration with local stakeholders and international partners in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management,” Burton stated.
Furthermore, he said the country’s natural treasures such as the heritage site and Morne Trois Piton National Park must be protected and promoted.
Burton encourages Dominicans to support this week of activities.
And get deep into the bushes if you are serious about forestry. Because much squatting is scattering deep inside our forest where the squatters are hewing down trees to sell and make coal. I remember when our forests were being taken care of by dedicated men and women. But today it’s simply making mention of it mainly for distraction. Get the work done first, then talk.
clean the botanical gardens
i doh come to talk. Not if is just for talking sake.
What happens after this week of activities?
Did the government give an accounting of how many trees were planted of the 1 million tree target that they set a few years ago?
yet the botanical gardens remains filthy, with empty plastic bags and other packaging under the shrubs and barely any public garbage bins. the urban furniture is seriously lacking. clean the botanical gardens man!
