Former West Indies cricketing greats, Lloyd and Greenidge, to be knighted

Greenidge, Lloyd

West Indies Legend, iconic captain of the 1980s, Clive Lloyd will be knighted as part of the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List and will be joined by former opening batsman, Gordon Greenidge.

According to regional sports TV network, Sportsmax, Lloyd and Greenidge are the latest member of former West Indies teams to receive knighthood, following greats like Sir Gary Sobers, Sir Everton Weekes, and Sir Vivian Richards.

Lloyd, who earned a CBE as early as 1993, was forced to wait on the prestigious honour because as a Guyanese citizen, knighthood would have to come directly from the Queen, unlike in the case in Antigua where that country gave the honour to Sir Vivian, Sir Curtly and Sir Richie directly.

Lloyd, who led the West Indies during its most successful era, is likely to have made the list for his contribution to cricket not with the Caribbean side but with English County outfit Lancashire, where he plied his trade for some 20 years.

Clive Lloyd and Gordon Greenidge are 75 and 68 years, respectively. Why did it take so long for them to be knighted?

The ICC should create a cricket hall of fame similar to the NBA, Major League Baseball, and the NFL to honor our cricketing greats. The Counsel should enact a process where a panel consisting of former players and accredited cricket journalists can vote periodically to honor and induct deserving players.

I sincerely believe that honoring our cricket heroes in such a transparent way will be infinitely more genuine, sensible and timely than the foolishness and folly of knighthood.

Who the heck cares about knighthood by an irrelevant monarchy? We do not need any royal validation to honor our heroes.

Tell the Crown to advise the British Parliament to do the right thing and grant permanent residency and citizenship to the Windrush generation and their descendants who worked their behinds off to help rebuild England.

it is a doggone shame that in 2019 some English football fans are hurling racists insults and bananas at footballers of African and Caribbean descent.

My advice to our Caribbean sports heroes is to bow and kneel only to the One who gave you you your life and your talents!!!
