Four Kalinagos to participate in the Caribbean Cadet camp

Kalinago Cadet for the upcoming Cadet camp

Arkeysha Valmond, the unit commander for the Castle Bruce Secondary School (CBSS) cadet unit, confirmed that four Kalinago youths have been selected to be on Team Dominica in the upcoming Caribbean Cadet camp. This camp will take place from  July 19 to  August 2, 2025, at the Pierre Charles Secondary School (PCSS) in Grand Bay, Dominica.

The Caribbean Cadet Camp takes place every two years. The last camp took place in Jamaica; this year, Dominica is hosting, and the next Camp will take place in Grand Cayman. The theme for this year’s came is: ‘Empowering our youths’.

Participants of the 2025 camp will come from Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia, Grenada, St. Vincent,
British Virgin Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, and Barbados.

The four Kalinago young cadets are: Chika Mason, Dony Darroux, Lenus Williams, and Lenous Williams.  Participation in the Caribbean Cadet Camp is an excellent opportunity and will benefit the Kalinago Territory as the event facilitates leadership development, skill enhancement, and cultural exchange.

There is concerted effort by the Kalinago leaders to take advantage of every opportunity to encourage the young people in general to be trained in leadership management/skill. It will also be a chance to build relationships since the camp itself aims to create a sense of camaraderie among campers, expand their horizon in communication skills, and teamwork.

Commander Valmond stated that in addition to all the skills they will acquire, they will also be exposed to orienteering (map reading), drill displays, shooting, cultural activities, sporting activities, and many more.

They need to quit integrating Kalinago into ‘their idea of European gun culture’, even though the Blacks have given up to the conquest. That’s how we got to this level of poverty after the devastating defeat where everything was taken from us all.
