Gaza ceasefire closer than ever; Israel presses stipulations

In a significant development in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, a tentative hostage deal has emerged, aiming to secure the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza for over 15 months. The Washington Post reports that the proposed agreement envisions a 42-day ceasefire that would take effect on Sunday, contingent upon approval from Israel’s cabinet and coalition government. This ceasefire would involve the Israeli military withdrawing from certain areas of Gaza, enabling a substantial influx of humanitarian aid to the region. In a reciprocal move, Israeli hostages would reportedly be exchanged for Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons.

U.S. President Joe Biden disclosed that the agreement is designed to be executed in phases. Following the initial ceasefire, negotiations will continue for the subsequent release of all hostages, a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the establishment of a permanent ceasefire. The deal emerged from discussions facilitated by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, with both President Biden and President-elect Donald Trump claiming credit for its mediation. Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, was reportedly present at consultations between stakeholders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, Netanyahu’s office has emphasized that the cabinet will not meet to discuss the agreement until Hamas fully accepts all conditions outlined in the deal. A Hamas spokesperson reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the agreement announced on Wednesday, although further details were not provided by either side.
