The Girl Guides Association of Dominica (GGAD) has joined millions of members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) in celebrating the centenary of World Thinking Day, a global tradition observed by more than 12 million girls across 153 countries.
This year’s milestone carries special significance, as it marks 100 years since the first World Thinking Day was held in 1926. For a century, the day has provided a platform for girls and women to speak out on issues affecting them worldwide. The 2026 theme, “Our Friendships,” highlights the bonds of sisterhood and solidarity that unite members across generations and borders.
The GGAD has organized a week of events to honor the centenary, blending tradition, reflection, and creativity:
- Sunday, February 22:
A commemorative Mass at the Roseau Cathedral, attended by Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton, President of the Commonwealth of Dominica and Chief Guide, along with her husband Mr. Burton. The National Scouts Organization also joined the ceremony. - Monday, February 23:
A Centennial Panel Discussion titled “Bond that Time Could Not Break” at the UWI Auditorium, streamed live on Facebook to engage a wider audience. - Tuesday, February 24:
Arts and poster creation activities, encouraging members to express the theme of friendship through visual storytelling. - Thursday, February 26:
National Pride Day, where Girl Guides, Rangers, Brownies, and Rainbows proudly wear their formal uniforms, symbolizing unity and tradition. - Friday, February 27:
A grand finale Talent Show at St. Martin Secondary School, showcasing the creativity and skills of Dominican youth in celebration of the centenary.
World Thinking Day began as a way for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to reflect on their shared values and support one another across borders. Over the decades, it has evolved into a global movement advocating for issues such as education, equality, and leadership opportunities for girls.
By embracing the theme of Friendship in 2026, the Girl Guides Association of Dominica underscores the enduring power of connection—both within the island and across the world.
This centennial celebration not only honors the past but also looks forward to a future where young women continue to lead, inspire, and strengthen communities through friendship and service.
Thank you DNO. Happy World Thinking Day GGAD!
