The Girl Guides Association of Dominica (GGAD) hosted a Sensay and Mask-making workshop from July 14 to 19, 2025, at St. Mary’s Academy. The event aimed to preserve and celebrate a cherished aspect of Dominica’s cultural heritage while also supporting the platform of Miss Teen 2025, Ms. Gabrielle Esprit.
According to a media statement by the Chief Commissioner, approximately 15 Girl Guides from various units participated in the hands-on workshop, gaining practical experience in creating Sensay costumes—an iconic element of local tradition, especially prominent during Carnival festivities.
Guided by expert artisans and cultural custodians, including John Riviere, Theresa Hector, and Eustace Hector, the girls learned about the history, cultural importance, and traditional techniques involved in Sensay and mask-making.
The GGAD stated:
“This initiative not only celebrates our culture, but also ensures that future generations can carry on this tradition with pride. The event saw enthusiastic engagement, fostering both community spirit and cultural pride.”
The organization also extended gratitude to the many local businesses and individuals who supported the workshop through donations and assistance.
The workshop concluded on Saturday, July 19, 2025, with a closing ceremony scheduled from 12:00 PM. to 1:00 PM, marking the successful culmination of this culturally enriching event.
That’s better than listening to the dunce do nothing UWP leaders.
Congratulations Girl Guides..
