Under the umbrella of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Blue and Green Economy, a series of upcoming official ceremonies will mark the completion of key infrastructure projects and the handover of critical equipment to fishers and agro-processors. These initiatives form part of the government’s ongoing efforts to expand the agro-processing and fisheries subsectors, strengthen food security, and create sustainable employment within the sector, shared the team.
According to a recent press release, on Wednesday, September 17, the Ministry will hand over 73 stainless steel tables valued at 268,000 dollars. This contract, awarded to Marinor Enterprises, will directly benefit 29 agro-processors. It also said that the new equipment will enhance operations at processing facilities, improve food safety standards, and increase the competitiveness of Dominican products on the market.
Government reports that on Friday, September 19, attention will turn to Soufrière with the delivery of 11 fishing vessels, representing a total investment of 475,000 dollars. The cost per vessel ranges from 37,500 dollars to 75,000 dollars. To date, 33 vessels have been constructed out of the targeted 51, with 21 already delivered to beneficiaries. The vessels, constructed by five local contractors under a one million dollar contract, are being provided to fishers whose livelihoods were impacted by Hurricane Maria, with the aim of providing fishers with safer, more functional spaces to operate and help sustain community livelihoods.
On Monday, September 22, at 3:00 PM, the Ministry will commission and hand over rehabilitated fish landing sites in Dublanc and Bioche. Contracts valued at EC$155,078 and EC$151,009.70, respectively, were awarded to local contractors from these communities. The projects involved the rehabilitation of locker rooms, storerooms, refrigeration rooms, interior and exterior works, as well as plumbing and electrical upgrades.
Additionally, the Ministry stated that it has completed renovations at the Mahaut fish landing site and is preparing to begin construction of fish vending facilities in Newtown and Fond Cole, along with fish landing sites in Stowe, San Sauveur, and Scott’s Head.
“Through these targeted interventions, the Government of Dominica reaffirms its commitment to building resilience in the agriculture and fisheries sectors while ensuring that our farmers, processors, and fishers are equipped to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development,” concluded the release.
