Habits Media Cafe owner charts path to recovery following Roseau fire

Fire rages in Roseau during early hours of Monday. March 2

Jelani James, described as “a devoted father of two”, and proprietor of Habits Media Cafe, is pressing forward with determined recovery efforts after the devastating Roseau fire on March 1, 2026, destroyed his business and wiped out his family’s main source of income.

The blaze, which tore through the Old Street and King George V Street area of Roseau, damaged or destroyed seven buildings and left James facing an estimated EC $35,810 in losses, said a press release from the James family. The statement outlined that among the items lost were vital pieces of equipment and infrastructure, including kitchen appliances, refrigerators, computers, tables, chairs, and inventory that once made Habits Media Cafe a welcoming hub for the community.

In the face of these setbacks, James has moved quickly to design a recovery plan aimed at restoring financial stability for his household, which includes his two children, ages 16 and 6.

According to the release, rather than waiting passively for assistance, he is pursuing the launch of a mobile food trailer business as a practical and immediate way to rebuild.

“This recovery plan is about more than replacing what was lost,” a family spokesperson explained. “It is about a father taking responsibility for his family’s future and working to rebuild through his own effort and community support.”

The proposed venture will offer a range of popular menu items, including BBQ chicken meals, burgers, fried fish, Creole lunch plates, snacks, and drinks. According to projections, the business could begin generating sustainable income within three months, with expected monthly profits ranging between $3,750 and $9,500.

To bring the plan to life, James is seeking $21,000 in startup funding. As per the release, the funds will go toward purchasing a used food trailer, as well as covering shipping, customs duties, cooking equipment, a generator, utensils, initial food supplies, and the necessary licensing and permits.

The recovery effort is structured around a 14-week timeline, guiding the process from fundraising to full business launch.

Support for James’ rebuilding initiative is being coordinated through two main channels. An international GoFundMe campaign is being managed by his mother, Denise James, while a local Dominica–Caribbean fund allows for direct bank transfers for those who prefer to contribute regionally.

Community members, businesses, and supporters interested in assisting can contribute through either platform or reach out directly to the campaign coordinators for further information.
