Hayley Mathews named ambassador for Caribbean Premier League

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has announced the appointment of Hayley Matthews as an official ambassador for the tournament. Recognized both on and off the cricket field, Matthews is expected to play a vital role in CPL’s efforts to promote the sport among girls and women, said an issued statement from the organization. Additionally, she will lead initiatives focusing on health and wellness throughout the Caribbean region.

Hayley Matthews, captain of the West Indies Women’s cricket team and a winner of the T20 World Cup, is described by the League as having  “rapidly become one of the most recognisable faces in global women’s cricket.”

Celebrated for her exceptional talent, professionalism, and unwavering dedication, the tribute says that Matthews embodies the vibrant spirit and energy characteristic of the Caribbean. Her new role signifies a major milestone in CPL’s ongoing dedication to fostering inclusivity and engaging with fans.

In her capacity as a CPL ambassador, Matthews will concentrate on two primary areas:

Women’s and Girls’ Participation: Collaborating with CPL and regional partners, she will lead initiatives designed to motivate and inspire young female cricketers. These efforts will include grassroots clinics, school outreach programs, and other activities aimed at removing barriers and encouraging more girls to pursue the sport.

Health & Wellness Campaigns: Leveraging CPL’s expanding platform and community influence, Matthews will spearhead campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles, mental health awareness, and physical fitness. Her personal journey as a high-performance athlete managing diabetes will serve as a powerful example to motivate fans to adopt healthier habits.

Pete Russell, CEO of CPL, expressed enthusiasm about Matthews’ new role, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Hayley Matthews to the CPL family in this new role. Hayley’s impact on the global stage has been nothing short of inspirational. Her presence will not only elevate the visibility of women’s cricket, but will also ensure CPL continues to be a fan-centric and inclusive tournament for everyone.”

Commenting on her appointment, Matthews shared her excitement: “It’s an honour to join CPL as an ambassador and help shape the future of cricket in the region. I’m passionate about giving more girls the chance to play and enjoy the game, and I’m excited to use this platform to promote healthier, more active lives across our communities.”

This weekend, Matthews will be participating in two prominent events in Barbados:

– CPL Trophy Tour at National Botanical Gardens: Saturday, July 19, from 12 PM to 6 PM.

– CPL’s Health & Wellness Day at Usain Bolt Sports Complex: Sunday, July 20, from 12 PM to 4 PM.
