After initially rebuffing bipartisan calls to resign and for her impeachment by Republicans, following a House Oversight Committee gathering on Monday, US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has tendered her resignation.
The scrutiny emerged after the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on July 13. The presidential candidate was shot in one ear. One rally attendee was left dead, and several injured, following the actions of a lone gunman.
Having first acknowledged the agency’s full responsibility for the security design and implementation on the fateful day of the shooting, major news outlets report that Cheatle admitted to significant security lapses at the rally where the incident occurred. Yet, initially, the security director resisted the pressure to bow out, reiterating that she was the person most suited to lead the agency.
However, since last week, as more information has surfaced, aspects of Secret Service accounts of the events were reportedly found to contradict those of local Pennsylvania law enforcement. Consequently, the agency’s handling of Trump’s security detail has come under intense questioning.
Specifically, failure to control access to the rooftop where the gunman perched and the handling of information passed on by local law enforcement regarding the gunman’s allegedly suspicious behavior preceding the attempt on Trump’s life have been highlighted.
Apparently succumbing to the backlash, the USSS director’s letter states that resigning was a “difficult” decision and indicated that she does not want the incident to distract agents from being fully focused on their job.
Cheatle was appointed to her position in 2022 by President Joe Biden, following a stint in private sector security for Pepsico. Previously, she had a 27-year tenure in the Secret Service.
President Biden has issued a statement commending Cheatle on her years of service and indicated that a new director will be appointed in short order.
This is what happens when you hire or elect people for important positions based on their identity instead of their qualifications. Biden’s cabinet is full of “diversity” hires from his LGBT transvestite “health” secretary “Rachel” Levine to the absolutely terrible press secretary who is the first black, lesbian, hatian press secretary and a self-procclaimed “historical figure”.
This woman specifically was more focused on trying to hire a certain percentage of women into the secret service, instead of focusing on having qualified people. Which is why Trump had a bunch of women who were supposed to be protecting him but some of them were more busy trying to save themselves and running around like chickens with their head cut off having no idea what to do in that situation.
