Editor’s note: This address was delivered by Director of HMMW, Pearle Christian, at a concert at the CHS auditorium on December 9, 2025.
When in 1983 I began instrumental tutoring at the Kairi school of Music, I taught students recorder and flute, doors flung wide open to the public.
I extend deep gratitude to Leng Sorhaindo, for initiating a project so admirable
For 19 years Kairi provided music education, with standards high and commendable.
The school eventually closed its doors, music teachers went separate ways.
I continued to offer tuition on flute, and those too were beautiful days!
Then in came 2015 with retirement from the Public Service,
The Henckell Muriel Workshop was officially established, now ten years later, we
reminisce.
I kept on tutoring on flute and opened up for the young on recorder
We started with two, and gradually grew, to as many as seventeen in number.
The passage of time wove an undulating landscape, with a roll of ebb and flow
Each student weaving a particular thread, into this Music workshop tapestry we now
know
With our current roll of 15 flutes and 16 recorders, we continue our upward climb,
Our mission simple and resolute, “Nurturing minds one note at a time”.
Today with gratitude we celebrate ten years, no fanfare, no flags unfurled,
Just some sweet music to warm your hearts and light up the corners of our world.
So ladies and gentlemen welcome to Musical flames and whether you stand or sit,
We hope that you receive it with as much love, as we laboured to prepare it!
Welcome!!!
Pearle Christian
