Hurricane Erin strengthens: Region braces for indirect impacts

Hurricane Erin officially became the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season at 11 a.m. today, marking a significant development in regional weather patterns. Located approximately 460 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands, Erin is now moving west-northwest at 18 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and higher gusts. Forecasters expect steady to rapid strengthening over the next 48 to 72 hours, with Erin likely to become a major hurricane by the weekend.

While Dominica is not expected to face a direct hit, the approach of Hurricane Erin will influence local conditions. Light winds are forecast across the island over the next 24 hours, accompanied by an increased chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms due to feeder bands associated with the storm. Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas and zones susceptible to landslides or falling rocks to remain vigilant and exercise caution.

Saharan dust is expected to linger through Saturday, posing potential respiratory risks. Health officials advise individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions to continue taking protective measures.

Seas around Dominica are expected to deteriorate, with wave heights reaching up to 3 feet along the west coast and up to 7 feet along the east coast. Swells are forecast to increase along the eastern coastline this afternoon, with further deterioration anticipated tonight into Saturday. Small-craft operators and all sea users are strongly advised to remain alert and monitor updates.

On its current trajectory, Hurricane Erin is expected to pass near or just north of the Northern Leeward Islands over the weekend. Watches have already been issued for portions of the Leewards, and residents across the Lesser Antilles are urged to monitor the storm’s progress closely for both direct and indirect impacts.

Stay tuned to official weather updates and advisories as Hurricane Erin continues to evolve.
