Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed Saturday in joint military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, according to multiple reports. An Israeli source confirmed his death to USA TODAY, while Reuters and CNN also reported that Khamenei was killed during the operation.
The strikes, announced by President Donald Trump, targeted Iran’s missile capabilities and marked the beginning of what he called “major combat operations.” Trump described the campaign as “a massive and ongoing operation” aimed at eliminating “imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”
In response, Iran launched drone and missile attacks against American and Israeli targets, striking a U.S. Navy base in Bahrain. While no American service members were reported injured, Iranian officials vowed that their enemies would be “decisively defeated.”
Images from Tehran showed smoke rising over the capital as residents fled for cover. Iranian authorities said at least 40 people were killed in a strike on a girls’ school in the south, underscoring the devastating civilian toll of the escalating conflict.
The confrontation follows weeks of rising tensions, with Trump repeatedly threatening military action if negotiations over Iran’s nuclear and missile programs failed. Saturday’s strikes appear to have fulfilled those warnings, plunging the region into a new phase of instability.
Khamenei’s death leaves Iran facing a leadership vacuum at a critical moment. Analysts warn that the fallout could reshape the balance of power across the Middle East, with unpredictable consequences for global security.

Boy PM Skerrit must be a very troubled man about this war between the US and Iran and then Iran’s retaliation by attacking the entire gulf countries.
