A recent ground invasion, part of what Israel refers to as Operation Gideon’s Chariots II, has seen Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) expand their operations in Gaza City.
MSN reported that, according to translated social media statements, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had said in earlier announcements, ” Gaza is burning.”
He also purportedly added, “We will not relent or turn back — until the mission is complete.”
Israel’s escalating military operation in Gaza City marks a significant intensification of its nearly two-year-long campaign in the Gaza Strip. Historically the most populous urban area within the enclave, the city remains a densely populated zone with hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced amidst ongoing fighting.
The Israeli government justified its military escalation as a strategic effort to dismantle Hamas’s military capabilities and secure the release of hostages taken during October 2023.
While Israel maintains that its primary objectives are to neutralize Hamas’ military capabilities and secure the release of hostages taken, Marko Papic, macro and geopolitical expert at BCA Research, told CNBC’s Dan Murphy, that “Hamas is an ideology that will persist, either in its current form or in some future form.”

A recent report by a United Nations Commission of Inquiry, cited by MSN, concluded that Israel has committed acts amounting to genocide against the Palestinian population in Gaza.
The commission’s findings, released on Tuesday, do not constitute an official UN statement but have significant implications for Israel’s international standing. The report highlights the severity of Israel’s military campaign, which has resulted in substantial civilian casualties and widespread displacement.
Notably, in the spring of 2024, countries such as Norway, Spain, and Ireland formally recognized Palestinian statehood, with France, Canada, and Australia announcing similar intentions in the subsequent month.
The international community’s stance has also been reflected in legal actions; the article reports that in November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister, and Hamas officials, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Gaza conflict and the October 2023 terror attacks.
According to MSN, in August, Norges Bank Investment Management announced it had divested from five Israeli banks and U.S.-based machinery manufacturer Caterpillar, citing concerns over their links to the Gaza conflict. Germany has also ceased weapons exports to Israel for use in Gaza.
Despite these moves, market reactions have been relatively muted, apart from brief increases in oil prices linked to confrontations involving Iran and its proxies, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.
