Jazz n Creole slated for May 5

Past Jazz n Creole event

Plans are in place to host the 13th Edition of the annual Jazz n’ Creole under the theme: “Creole Fusion”, blending creole traditions with a festive flair in outfits that combine traditional Creole elements with a modern colourful twist.

This was according to Communications and Public Relations Specialist of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), Monelle Alexis who was addressing a press conference held at the Old Mill Cultural Center on Wednesday.

The event is expected to take place on May 5 at the Fort Shirley Cabrits National Park in Portsmouth from 2 pm to 9 pm.

“The melody of Jazz n’ Creole is about to take over…,” she said. “The theme for this year is Creole Fusion, think of bold prints, lively prints, and unique accessories.”

She said details of tickets, cost, and lineup of the different artists will be announced soon.

“Also, you can expect weekly press conferences from our team as of March 2024,” Alexis stated.

Following the staging of the 12th annual Jazz n’ Creole last year, Tourism Minister Denise Charles-Pemberton stated that the event recorded a 59% increase in attendance.

She revealed that the festival also saw an impressive 55% increase in revenue from 2022, attracting visitors from the region, the French West Indies, the United States, and Dominican nationals abroad.

I agree Marcus and I have been saying the same for years.

This quote from their press release says it all:

“The melody of Jazz n’ Creole is about to take over…,” she said. “The theme for this year is Creole Fusion, think of bold prints, lively prints, and unique accessories.”

Even Dominican termites have better taste: They have eaten their way through the covers of my prized LP jazz collection and devoured a whole chapter of James Lincoln Collier’s definitive history of jazz – which incidentally, contains an excellent account of the creole influence in jazz.

Why have this event at the same time as the St Lucia Jazz Festival??
Doesn’t the tourism department check these things out first before deciding a date for our festive?

The name of this event is completely misleading as it suggests live jazz music will be performed when in reality there hasn’t been any for years. It’s a creole and fashion event that’s predominently attended by Dominicans. DDA should stop duping people into believing it is something it is not.

Marcus: “The name of this event is completely misleading as it suggests live jazz music will be performed when in reality there hasn’t been any for years.”

This is completely untrue. The list of performers always includes jazz acts. Always. There is even at least one featured jazz performer, in addition to others. The sub-genre might not be classical jazz, but it is still jazz.

So, quit the lies and mischief. If you do not know, research before you come out here spilling lies.

    • who cares

World Creole Music festival has artists from all types of genres including hip-hop. It’s just a name. Nobody in Dominica really cares that much about genres of music, most of them couldn’t differentiate them even if their life depended on it. Just let people enjoy themselves at least it’s one more event on this boring rock that is not just another triple kay type ghetto sewo.
