The Kalinago Council initiated a program for small business owners in the Territory and this initiative was launched on June 18, 2025. The first beneficiary of this new initiative is a young entrepreneur by the name of Kemmy Valmond of St. Cyr. He received a sum of eight thousand dollars.
For the past ten years, he has been operating a tire repair shop, the only one in the area. Such an initiative by the Council is great news. The Kalinago Chief and Councilors are fully aware that supporting small businesses is consequential for economic growth, community development, and generating jobs.
A Council representative, who holds the portfolio for small business initiative, said that when this present Council came into office, one of their first lines of business was to assist small business owners. The first recipient was given a grant
with funds on hand which the Council received from rent and other donations.
The Council has decided to help one business owner per year depending upon the availability of funds. To qualify under this program, an individual must complete a form provided by the Council, provide proof that their business is operational, present records, and have good character. Kemmy was selected as the first recipient based on his youthfulness who is now 21 years old, innovative, and must have the potential capacity to excel in business. The recipient also has a responsibility to make a financial contribution to the Council when the business is fully operational.
Kemmy is extremely grateful for this opportunity and now he can upgrade the building and buy new equipment so that he can serve his customers more professionally.
“I am grateful for the opportunity the Chief and counselors have given to me. Now, I can upgrade my building into a more resilient structure to secure my equipment and tools from thieves” said Kemmy.
He continued, “I started by helping my father at a tender age on weekends and holidays and when he passed, I continued with the business, being supported by the people in my community, bus drivers, family, and friends. Life is hard but I intend to continue with the business despite the challenges because this is all I have to earn a dollar. I believe that is why the Council went in my favor because they are seeing my struggle”.
The Council stated that it was unable to fund the entire renovation of his tire shop, which will cost fifteen thousand dollars.
However, the Council is optimistic that others will lend a helping hand so that the full amount can be achieved. The Council and Kemmy are appealing to the community for help in any way possible so that he can both serve and earn a living.
