Dominica’s cyclist, Kohath Baron will compete in the 12th Annual Tour De Grand Bahama, scheduled for February 8-9, 2025. Baron won the men’s category last year.
The highly anticipated event, organized by the Grand Bahama Cycling Association (GBCA), is a three-stage competition featuring a time trial, criterium, and road race sponsored by the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA).
According to reports from thenassauguardian.com GBCA Vice President Lorna Masis said that cyclists will compete in five categories: Male Open, Masters Open, Women’s Open, U23 Males, and Junior.
Bahamian female cyclist Kami Roach is the defending champion in the Women’s Open category.
The article further states that the competition will begin with the time trial at 7 AM on Saturday. That race, stage 1, will begin at the International Bazaar, along East Sunrise Highway to the Coral Road roundabout and return.
Masis said, “The cyclists in this event will be riding against time. It is really to see which rider can cover the 3.7-mile route in the fastest time.”
Stage 2 is the criterium race. A criterium, or crit, is a bike race consisting of several laps around a closed circuit.
“The cyclists in this category are expected to cover the required miles in an hour plus three laps,” Masis said.
The crit will close out day one of the Tour de Grand Bahama.
On Sunday at 8 AM, the cyclists will be back on the road for the final stage, the grueling road race in all the categories.
“In the road race there are different stages for each of the categories. The male competitors have an 80-mile distance; the females a 60-mile course and the juniors will compete in a 40-mile race,” Masis explained.
The road race will start at the GBPA headquarters in downtown Freeport, go north on East Mall to the Grand Bahama International Airport roundabout, east along Grand Bahama Highway to the Sir Jack Hayward Bridge roundabout, come back along Grand Bahama Highway to East Mall, south to the Ranfurly Circus then along East Sunrise Highway to the Casuarina Bridge and return
