Kopounoule Inc., with the backing of Land Rights Now, has announced the launch of an initiative aimed at revitalizing interest in Kalinago culture among indigenous youth. Emerging in response to recent research conducted by the organization, this project was born out of the pressing need that was identified to engage younger generations in the preservation and celebration of their cultural heritage.
According to the organizers, the program centers on three primary focus areas:
1. Promoting Awareness of the Escazú Agreement and Environmental Advocacy
Recognizing the significance of environmental rights and transparency, the project seeks to educate youth about the Escazú Agreement. The Agreement was adopted on March 4, 2018, in Escazú, Costa Rica, prioritizing regional accord on access to information, participation, and justice in environmental matters in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through a series of workshops and community dialogues, young participants of the Kopounoule program will learn about how environmental initiatives are linked to cultural preservation.
2. Supporting Women’s and Mental Health in the Context of Climate Change
Given the adverse impacts of climate change on communities, this component aims to provide women with resources and support mechanisms to address health and mental well-being challenges. The goal is to empower women to take on leadership roles within their families and communities, fostering resilience amid environmental shifts.
3. Mentorship in Arts, Herbal Medicine, and Traditional Cuisine
To foster pride and a deeper connection to their roots, the project will establish mentorship programs pairing youth with master artisans, herbalists, and culinary experts. Participants will gain hands-on experience in traditional crafts, herbal medicine practices, and the preparation of Kalinago cuisine. This approach aims to instill a strong appreciation for cultural heritage and encourage the transmission of indigenous knowledge.
Two key personnel have been appointed: Angel Ettienne as the Youth Project Officer and Anjanee Debysinh as the Community Liaison Officer. Their roles involve fostering community engagement and ensuring active participation among youth and women.
Kopounoule Inc. is passionate about young people joining this cultural revitalization effort, viewing active youth involvement as essential for strengthening cultural ties and empowering future leaders within the Kalinago community.
Through its various programs and initiatives, the group states, “We are committed to supporting indigenous practices, promoting sustainable development, and advocating for the rights of underserved communities.”
