Reigning Miss Dominica 2024 and newly crowned Miss OECS 2025, Kyanna Dyer, said she plans to use her platform ‘Youth in Culture Through the Arts’ to empower young people in Dominica and across the region. She aims to create opportunities for them to embrace their heritage through music, dance, drama, poetry, and visual arts.
Her comments came while addressing this week’s Mas Domnik 2025 press conference organized by the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC).
Dyer was crowned Miss OECS 2025 among four other competitors during the pageant held at Windsor Park Sports Stadium Forecourt on January 31, 2025.
“As I take this new role I do so with a mission, to expand the work that I have started as Miss Dominica 2024,” she said. “My platform, ‘Youth in Culture Through the Arts’ has always been about empowering young people by reconnecting them with their cultural identity through artistic expression.”
She continued, “As Miss OECS 2025 I plan to extend this initiative beyond Dominica, creating opportunities for youth across the region to embrace their heritage through music, dance, drama, poetry, and visual arts.”
Dyer’s hope is to see more youth actively participating in the arts, “not just as a hobby, but as a valuable path towards personal and professional development.”
Dyer explained that about three weeks ago she received a call from the DFC informing her of this incredible opportunity to participate in the Miss OECS Pageant.
“In that moment I had a choice to let the short time frame discourage me or to rise to the occasion.,” she explained. Evidently, Dyer chose the latter.
She added, “For two weeks, consistently, my team and I worked tirelessly preparing in overdrive, fueled by faith, resilience, and an unshakable belief that this crown was within reach. Today I stand before you as evidence knowing that every late night, every sacrifice, and every ounce of effort was worth it.”
Moreover, Dyer describes Dominica’s culture as “the heartbeat of our people”.
“It tells our stories, preserves our history, and shapes our future,” she stated. “Through workshops, collaborations with regional, cultural organizations, and initiatives that give young artists a platform to showcase their talent, I want to inspire a new generation to take pride.”
Dyer promised to continue to serve as Miss OECS 2025 with a purpose, “advocating for the causes close to my heart and representing our region with pride.”
“This victory is not just mine, it is Dominica’s, it is the OECS, it is ours…,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Dyer said she is prepared to pass on the Miss Dominica title in the next two weeks with a heart filled with gratitude.
“To the young women who will take this journey next, know that it is a responsibility, an opportunity to inspire and a chance to uplift those around you,” she noted.
She thanked her primary sponsor, the OECS PEARL, her support system which included family, friends, her solid team, the DFC, and the Dominican public for their unwavering support.
How do you intend to do this? Through Ocean Edge hotel her sponsors. That platform is just none sensical.
