Linton says a UWP administration will review government no-bid contracts

Linton speaking at UWP news conference last week

Opposition Leader Lennox Linton has said the United Workers Party (UWP) will review no-bid contracts financed by Dominican money.

“This business of Dominicans not having any opportunity to enter a bid for construction work in Dominica financed by monies from the sale of our passports is unacceptable and will be discontinued,” Linton said at a UWP news conference last week. “They say we want to stop projects; no, we don’t want to stop projects, we will review without an apology, every single no-bid contract financed by Dominican money.”

Especially those awarded on behalf of the government by a private company, Montreal Management Company Limited, Linton stated.

“All of these will be reviewed and we make absolutely no apologies for that,” the UWP leader said. “It’s in the best public interest to do so.”

Meantime, Linton made it clear that his party will not dismantle the National Employment Programme (NEP) and the focus will be on creating employment.

“This talk about the NEP, the National Employment Program we are being clear that our focus is going to be on creating employment,” he stressed. “We will create by 2025, 12,000 new jobs in this economy.”

He added, “We will do it in our Nature Island agriculture; we will do it in our Nature Island tourism; we will do it in the construction sector, in manufacturing. We will do it in the renewable energy sector…a total revamp of all the engines of growth to allow them to function like they have never functioned before, will open up the employment potential of the economy of Dominica.”

Linton reiterated that the UWP focus will be on real jobs in the economy, “but not to walk into government and dismantle the National Employment Program that is not the intention at all.”

He said the NEP will continue to serve a different purpose.

“It will be a training ground for entrepreneurship and so on as we prepare people for the world of work which will grow by leaps and bounds by our stewardship,” Linton noted.

As an outsider, this is normally the playbook of Third World politics. Not having any policy direction and just inciting the “members” to shout “YEAH, it’s about time”. When you think critically about it, what really comes out of these kinds of comments? NOTHING! Take a look from Jamaica to Trinidad, after getting into power “Nothing ever happens”!

Let’s look beyond statements like “we will investigate” this or that and find out WHAT these men will do for the country and HOW they intend to achieve what the intend to do. What are their policy statements which will guide them to this end?

Let’s not allow any politician to hoodwink us into following them blindly and cause the good people to end up hating each other. In the final analysis they win and everybody else, including the country (which I would like to visit soon) loses.

Linton, you cannot organise your own selfish low down gutter party and is Dominica you can run?? Or are you talking about running Dominica to the ground which is it?

Lennox, has no plan to build Dominica. After he disgracefully bashed and criticize the NEP, his #1 idea is to use Skerrit’s NEP policy to create 12000 jobs. Well Lennox once again you have defeated your own chance at the poll coming Dec 6th. Dominicans are not that foolish. You and your team will destroy dominica again if you get that power. But it will not happen.

And the nonsensical behavior of the Prime Minister continues. Fellow Dominicans look deep, see what is happening to us while the P.M has prepared his last supper and is on his routine to New York. HIS NEW HOME!

I think Linton put young Marcellin in a constituency where he knows he cannot win ( because Skerrit is king there). His main reason being that the young man would pose a serious threat to his leadership of the UWP if he were to win his seat. Why did they not put him in Marigot or Salisbury and Lennox himself or Spaggs run in Roseau north where Lennox resides? Lennox hardly spends time in Marigot. I don’t know why Marigot people think he representing their interest once they give him their vote.

“Especially those awarded on behalf of the government by a private company, Montreal Management Company Limited, Linton stated”.

Lennox, what is your beef against “Montreal Management company Limited”?

Man, do you really believe that there is a construction company in Dominica that can do the job that that company was assigned to do?

Well I live in Toronto, Canada; I myself, live in a highrise building, and when I see all those other buildings around me, I know that no construction business in Dominica can do that job on their own–they will need tight supervision and instruction; I can imagine that this is what Montreal Management Company Limited are doing. I am sure that they employ many Dominicans–who will someday manage on their own.

Man stop being so selfish, don’t you see that it is not working for you?

Lizzy, that foreign company was given a no bid multi-million dollar government contract to build housing apartments. No other construction company was offered the opportunity to compete for the job. Liz, this is the main source of corruption with most governments around the globe. This is the popular avenue politicians use to abuse public funds and enrich themselves, their families and close associates. This should be of monumental concern to all honest, right thinking citizens. Hope you fully appreciate the gravity of the concern now.

      • November 19, 2019

@Ibo France, thank you for referring to me as a friend, all my friends call me Liz–only business-people or not so close friends call me Elizabeth.

And I won’t say that you don’t have a point, it is just that I cannot perceive it from just “writing” or “speaking” I need more than that to accept it as a truth–especially that the majority of Dominicans accept what you reject.

I perceived PM Skerrit’s character long before I started following on DNO and facebook, by the inspiration of my mind.

He is human so he is not perfect, but I cannot find it in my heart to accept the claim that he is a corrupt man, far more for the “dictator” title that you all have given him–only God knows and He alone will deal with this.

        Please understand!

% on a daily basis you are just rambling about what is in place and working. Is it because of your medication or you don’t have anything to offer? You want to lead the nation, yet you don’t have or know anything constructive that will lead the country to a better future. It’s over four years since you a leading your party, but, you are just criticizing every thing, while you cannot offer nothing substantial! How lazy, uneducated and intellectually bankrupt you are, to think that you can talk yourself into the highest position in Dominica. You are quite articulate yes, but you are also a high school dropout, who never sought to learn a trade or skill. How can the Dominican scholars associate themselves with you! Plain and simple they are setting your up so they could achieve their greatness!

Lennox, it is very clear that you have no clue. If you want development in Dominica, here are some contracts which will be no bid. These are some for example, ( to build an international airport, geothermal plant, good Bridges and highways, a marina, and the climate resilience homes currently under construction just to name a few) all these will be no bid contracts because Dominica do not have company with enough experience/ history building such. That was obvious after hurricane. Dominica contractors fail badly on building their own home. Lennox who are not fit to manage Dominica’s affair. You will not be Prime Minister.

Please UWP, Kindly advise your leader to refrain from these statements, they do nothing for the party! They only alienate potential undecided voters. He should focus on plans for the development of the country. His focus thus far has been completely misguided and with those utterances, he will not win the upcoming elections. By his attitude and statements, he is simply handing the elections to Dr. Skerrit. It may be too late but I think the time is right for a new and different leader to the UWP other than Mr. Linton. Unfortunately, it should not be Mr. Joshua Francis. So the obvious question is who else? It is difficult to find a leader from the current group, Mr. Clement Marcellin is a potential leader but he is inexperienced and it would be wrong to saddle him with this responsibility so prematurely. I would suggest that he be granted the deputy position so he can learn and in a caretaker position, Maybe Mr. Ronald Charles or Mrs. Monelle Williams as party leader.

Your comments about job confirm how tough it is finding gainful employment in Dominica. Congratulation, you have spoken the truth about the hard times in DA. Thousands of people can’t find sustainable, good paying jobs. There is a prolonged and economically crippling job drought plaguing Dominicans presently. Due to the acute joblessness too many families are experiencing food insecurity. Many babies, adolescents and adults go to bed on empty stomachs every night. Living in Dominica is a hellish nightmare for far too many citizens and residents. Something has to CHANGE! The Skerrit led government has to GO ! The present living conditions are unbearable. Just CAN’T take five (5) more years of this constant HUNGER and MISERY.

Both parties are offering change but I thought change was constant, which means it is always happening. The question is what kind of change and who can bring change for better. The world has changed in the sense of more development/technology and so has Dominica, whether we wish to admit it or not. I just wonder if the better that we keep seeking is really better.

Skerrit is a HATER of Da and his no – bid contracts to ud is just a reminder and confirmation.
When Skerrit was the minister of education in the Pierre Charles administration he applied for and accepted French Citizenship, which was his first sign that he was not in love with Da.
When Skerrit broke the hearts of our ladies we all thought he was going to marry and while some were still dreaming Skerrit ran to NY and planned a secret wedding with Melissa, who was married in NY and was a legal resident in the US, it was another sign that Skerrit was not in love with DA.
When he and Melissa went to give birth to their children in NY, it was a BIG confirmation of his dislike for DA
When he destroyed all we had and depended on such as our banana industry, Ross University and Palmolive just to name a few it was proof that he didn’t like us
When he gave all our contracts to foreigners without any bid from locals it was further proof that he only cared about using us to make his millions

    • November 18, 2019

@My Eyes wide open, I can’t believe that at this moment 8 people have accepted that foolish comment of yours.

Is Lady Mellisa not a Dominican? And why is it our business where the Prime Minister went to find his wife; and were his children born in another country?

As the Prime Minister, anything can happen to him because he also has enemies, would it not be easier for Lady Mellisa to return to their children’s place of birth

Why do you people insist on taking on the Prime Minister’s personal Life as you all’s business–you people want to be free, doesn’t he has the right to that freedom as well?

PM Skerrit is a hater, you say! And yet the majority of Dominicans love him?

Last night a posted a photo on facebook of him and Lady Mellisa, in less than two hours 300 people had liked and loved that post–by now it must be 500 or more people–a hater you say!

      Come on, man, you people!

Liz, when you become a public figure especially one who represents us in everything he says or does, your entire life becomes public. If the PM sere to walk in a supermarket and stole a tin of milk and get fight, the entire nation will be embarrassed. If you did the some only you, Liz, will be embarrassed. When one runs for public office you can forget about privacy, it just goes with the territory. Anyone of us has the right to call out Mr. Skerrit, not so bright Melissa or even Mr. Linton, when they do wrong.

“Anyone of us has the right to call out Mr. Skerrit, not so bright Melissa or even Mr. Linton, when they do wrong.”

@Ibo France, okay then. But what about the goods thing that they do? Can a person be loved by the majority of his Nation, if there was more bad than good about his character?

And how did that “eyes-wide-open” person see hatred in PM Skerrit? Well someone had to confound that statement and I am glad it was me.

Now you include Lennox in the “rebuked” factor, but how many times have you rebuked his behavior?

I have witnessed a lot of bad behavior or bad comments in him. And if I read or see some kind of bad remark or behavior about PM Skerrit, I will point it out. I have done so in the past.

What wasn’t included in this written article was the bit Linton said when he stated on Marpin TV, He said that if in the process of reviewing all these projects funded by the CBI program, it resulted in job losses, that wasn’t important to him. It would appear to me the only job Linton care about is his dream job, “Prime Minister”. Well, i have news for you Linton, the hundreds of people currently employed in projects funded by the CBI program who are able to pay their rent, mortgages, everyday bills, feed and take care of their families, and the hundreds more who are likely to get gainful employment when these and other new projects come on stream, will care more about their jobs than your ambitious ‘dream job’, so i want to see how you will get these people to vote for you – unless they like you more than themselves and their families.

The man has destroyed an entire country. That’s INSANITY! He destroyed agriculture, manufacturing, hospitals, health centers, roads, bridges, the whole economy. He chased a forty year old institution that contributed 1/3 of the country’s GDP out of Dominica. The country is the least economically and infrastructurally developed in the sub Caribbean. Who’s really crazy now? He, Mr. Skerrit, has the best dubious record of all of present Caribbean prime ministers. Think seriously about the permanent harm and damage that Skerrit has done to the people of Dominica, to many yet unborn. He has left a legacy of Corruption and Shame.

I don’t know since when Dominicans were not good enough to work in their own country. Definitely it’s not before Maria because that hypocrite Skerrit, before Maria, told Dominicans in the BVI not to come down to Dominica because the BVI needed their experience and expertise to rebuild after Irma had hit them. But a week after Maria destroyed us and all of a sudden Dominicans are not good enough to rebuild their own country and therefore he bypasses Dominicans and hired foreigners to rebuild our country. Now a days Dominicans not good enough to build road side drains as everything damn contract is given to foreigners without our people even get a chance to bid on them. What a shame!
