For those who have ever wondered what it would be like to influence the direction of a live performance, there is an opportunity, slated for next month, to participate firsthand in an improvised theatre show.
Local improv group Mission Improvable promises that this form of entertainment, blending drama, mystery, and comedy, will offer a dynamic and unpredictable experience, where no two performances are alike.
Improv theatre consists of a series of short scenes crafted spontaneously, with the storyline emerging entirely from audience suggestions, explained a press release. Mission Improvable, a community-based troupe, was established in the summer of 2024 as part of the Waitukubuli Artist Association.
According to the press release, the group quickly gained recognition with their debut solo event in August 2025, titled “Anansi vs Tiger Improv Battle,” which sold out at the UWI Auditorium.
It also shared that their talent and humor have also earned them praise at various other events, including appearances at the Paradise of Colors and Expressions Art Exhibition, Rhythm & Rhymes/Xpression at KaTai, Lyrics Under The Stars, and the Waitucirque Festival in Nou Sé Histoire.
Looking ahead, the members of Mission Improvable are eager to present their planned major solo production. While improvisational theatre is inherently unique each time it is performed, the group is introducing a new format to their repertoire.
Traditionally known for quick, humorous scenes, they report that they are now experimenting with longer narrative structures that involve six characters and overarching storylines spanning multiple scenes.
Their upcoming show will feature a full one-act play, blending elements of mystery, comedy, and drama, all crafted live based on audience input.
“Improv is a very special type of performance, for both the audience and the performers”, said Sonja Wiencke, who founded Mission Improvable.
“As an audience member, you’re not just passively sitting there, watching some talented people on a stage, you’re co-creating the performance through your suggestions,” she added.
Jaleel Ahiwa, an improviser with the group, remarked, “Improv seems strange at first, but very quickly you find yourself sucked in because of how intense the story becomes or how the performers are able to pull something completely at the drop of the hat, that shock factor keeps you glued to the performances.”

I like the idea of improvisational theatre.
On the subject of theatre, is restoration work still in progress on our one and only theatre?
