In the spirit of generosity and community support during the Christmas season, Somerset Sports Club of St. Joseph, undertook a charitable initiative and reached out to both seniors at the national level and underprivileged individuals within its local community to share the joy of the holiday season.
A press release from the organization shared that this gesture was undertaken on the heels of the celebration of its 50th anniversary, making it the longest-standing sporting organization in Dominica, and the subsequent addition of a Community Development and Social Enhancement Program to its sporting activities.
As part of its seasonal outreach, Somerset Sports Club stated that it distributed a variety of essential groceries, including chicken, beans, rice, beverages, and toiletries, to the Dominica Infirmary and the Grotto Home for the Homeless. At the community level, the club also reportedly extended support to the Seventh Day Adventist Church by donating chicken and beans, assisting in preparing a warm and nutritious Christmas meal for those in need. The recipients of these donations expressed heartfelt gratitude, recognizing the club’s compassionate and empathetic gesture as a meaningful contribution to their holiday celebrations.
The club’s leadership emphasized that, despite facing its own set of challenges, the decision to make these donations was rooted in humanitarian principles. On the sporting front, Somerset Sports Club indicated that it is nearing the completion of a concrete wicket located adjacent to the St. Joseph playing field. This project, approximately 90% finished, aims to bolster the development of cricket in the area. The new facility is also intended to serve as a foundation for a comprehensive Youth Development Program, which will focus on nurturing young boys starting from the age of ten and beyond.
The executive team of Somerset Sports Club expressed sincere appreciation to all those whose generosity and support made this charitable effort possible, reaffirming their commitment to fostering community growth and development through sport and outreach initiatives.
