[Loop News] Brian Lara laments crime situation in Trinidad and Tobago

Former West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara has warned that without “the skills and resources necessary to succeed, some young people will turn to crime as a means of survival,” as he lamented the upsurge in murders in Trinidad and Tobago.

The country has recorded more than 200 murders since the start of this year, following the record 603 murders last year.

In a statement from India where he is serving as the head coach for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lara, 54, said he was in “complete shock and dismay” at the killings in Santa Cruz that lies between the hills of the Northern Range where he grew up,   including a triple murder just last week.

Criminal behavior is rampant all across the Caribbean. I commend Lara for using his voice and platform to sound the alarm on this growing scourge that is wreaking havoc on both a personal and societal level.

Brian Lara must have woken up from a very deep sleep. Violent crime has been plaguing Trinidad for years under many administrations. Trinidad is corrupt from the top down and that includes the police.
For him to talk as if he is now waking up to the rampant crime situation in Trinidad tells me that he has either been in denial or he is out of touch with what is happening in his country.

He came out, because the crime hit home ( one of his associates). The politicians are the same . Apart from them being, their reaction is prompt only when one of theirs get affected. They are too busy filling their pockets.

Mr ds,it is a fact that the Dominica police went after crimes and criminals with a vengeance in the 70s and 80,There were no gangs. The police was tasked with the responsible to take out a terrorist organization(Dreads) four terrorists were shot dead in Belles. In 1981 thr police patrolled and secured Dominica, when Patrick John,Malcolm Reid and Julian David were arrested in an attempted coup during operation RED DOG .Later in December 1981 the police had to deal with an attempted coup,by members of Dominica defence force. One police and two members of the defence force were killed. In 1983 a C-130 Hercules took members of the police force from DC Airport to Pointe Salines in Grenada. In 1984 the police were trained by the 7th Special Forces 82nd Airborne Division. In those days the police did not kiss politicians A.They did not care a flying F about politicians. That was a BROTHERHOOD.Since UWP won the election in 1995 everything changed, the police were victimized, dismissed and disrespected.

I read Brian Lara’s comments in the Trinidad Express and agree with most of what was written.

Too many Caribbean jurisdictions are overrun with homicides, rapes, child sexual abuse, larceny, and widespread corruption in government.

Crime affects everyone. It does not discriminate. It affects the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich. Therefore, it would take the involvement of the whole of civil society, and not law enforcement or the government alone, to significantly reduce these crimes to an acceptable level.

All hands should be on deck fighting against this scourge. He who does not prevent a crime when he can, encourages it.

That’s his first preemptive swing of the bat at the corrupt powers that be especially Mr. Rowley. Lara is heading for the prime ministership some day and he has to speak the truth. When no nonsense police commissioner Mr. Gary Griffith started taking down hoodlums and the white collar criminals associated with the cabal over there, the PM and police service commission crooked him and brought in a Carbon-like woman as commissioner.

Now the criminals are running rampant. If only Trinidad would bring back Gary Griffith and make Supt. Roger Alexander deputy, criminals will be leaving T&T by pwe-pwee. Its time that police chiefs and deputies in the region get elected every 3 years similar to what happens in the US with Chief Constables and Sheriffs. Only then will we see criminals be held accountable and cabals become a thing of the past. Go Lara Go!!

Here is your answer, Ibo France and Francisco Telemakak. You both think it is only in Dominica that there is an uptick of crimes, all sorts of crimes. It is all over the caribbean islands today, not just Dominica. It is a sad commentary. All Governments seem to be impotent about what’s happening in their respective islands today. It is not even half a year yet and both Jamaica and Trinidad have recorded over 200 homicides each. Think about it. American television, the ease with which people are travelling today, tourists swarming our beaches and appearing nude on our beaches, all these factors have contributed to a spike in crimes in all the islands today. Wha we gonna do. Everyday things are getting worse and try as we may we don’t know who to trust. The reading of the gospel will soon be done all over the world. Ah way we gonna do?

Garbage talk. A fool comparing Jamaica with about 3 000 000 people and Trinidad with about 1.5 million, to Dominica with about 60 000people. Dominica was always a quiet and peaceful country. What Skerrit needs to do is to make sure he provides the environment for jobs to thrive. Instead he gave the same youth small portions to smoke and say lazy. His wife hails them up calling then snipers, soldiers, navy seals, etc. You are simply a ……. spewing foolishness. You must be a very corrupt human being as well.
      Shame on you!!
Why cant Dominuca lead the way in peace and tranquility. That is what you need to promote.

Garbage. You and Francisco always want to talk about how many square miles and the population compared to Dominica. Size does not matter at all. Crime is rampant everywhere, big or small. Big crime, small crime, it is still a crime. Get off your rockers, me.

Size matter brother, and in everything as well…Have you heard about trading blocks? Do you know what that means relative to size?
You do not sound too clever, but stop exposing your ignorance in public.

Don’t worry Lara. Emperor Gwo porch the 1st is working with MMC to develop a school curriculum that will eradicate crime in the whole region. Too many children in trini doing too many subjects for cxc. 15 and 16 subject nah cut it. We here in dominica waiting with bated breath to see what magic Emperor Gwo porch the 1st has since his imperial declaration was met with rousing approval and praise from the crime symposium in trini. Emperor GWO porch the 1st has single handedly put DA on the global arena and turned citizenship into Largent shesh. It is akin to turning water into wine and stone into bread so certainly education reform to crimeless criminals is on its way. Lara may I remind you that Emperor gwo porch the 1st is also called doctor doctor by his loyal subjects.
