Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit Saint Kitts and Nevis on February 25 to participate in the 50th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM. Official word from the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown is that the trip underscores the United States’ ongoing efforts to engage with Caribbean nations and bolster regional cooperation.

During his visit, Secretary Rubio plans to meet with Caribbean leaders to discuss and promote “shared priorities”, including enhancing regional security, strengthening collaborations to address illegal immigration and illicit trafficking, and fostering economic development, health initiatives, and energy security throughout the Caribbean.

In addition, the U.S. press release claims that Rubio will reaffirm the United States’ commitment to working alongside CARICOM member states to promote stability and prosperity across the hemisphere.

Meanwhile, a recent article in the St Kitts Observer highlighted that this visit is part of what has been described as a diplomatic “reset” in U.S.-Caribbean relations.

“The initiative is reportedly focused on strengthening strategic ties and promoting closer alignment with Washington’s foreign policy objectives,” reports the Observer.

Furthermore, sources suggest that the United States is seeking increased regional support for its stance on political issues in Havana.

The article says that the visit is also perceived as a strategic move to manage the growing influence of China within CARICOM nations, with Washington aiming to deepen ties and bring Caribbean countries “more firmly into its sphere of partnership.”

All these commentors with no position or authority talking big like they would be doing any different if they were in the position that caribbean leaders find themselves now. Sure go ahead and be all adversarial to the U.S. rep meanwhile your countrymen all want to keep (or regain) the privilege to travel to the United States or to be able to trade with them. The fact that so many of you can’t recognize the reality of the position that we’re in and somehow think that the caribbean can “take a stand” or some other crap like that shows exactly why so many people just shouldn’t be allowed to vote

Hahah. You Dominicans are about to be humbled by the might of the USA.

It’s in our best interest to hear what they say and turn away from our sins and bad decisions of the CBI. This endangers the entire world.

I suppose you won’t be using the new international Airport because it is the CBI money that’s funding its construction. Not your tax money. Are you not happy?

So is this the main reason why this US warship is in port in St.Kitts? Is that Trump’s administration method of gunboat diplomacy to threaten the Caribbean leaders into yielding to Trump’s wishes, or else! I hope the CARICOM heads hold him accountable for the deaths of Caribbean nationals blown up in their boats by the American military in Caribbean waters. At some point these murdering criminals will be brought to the International Court of Justice to answer for their crimes.

These CARICOM ‘figureheads’ will have an open opportunity to be direct and plain spoken with Little Marco. This is a most opportune occasion to voice their views and misgivings about the wanton bombing of small fishing boats, the visa restrictions, the unfair and inhumane additional economic squeeze on Cuba, the forced deportees’ policies, etcetera.

My bet is that these weaklings will treat Little z!Arco with utmost deference. We act is as though we don’t have any sovereign rights. We just comply to all of America’s commands as if we suffer from Stockholm Syndrome. When will these Heads stand up for something on behalf of the people of our region?
