Parliamentary Representative for the Marigot Constituency, Anthony Charles has said he is in full support of the Electoral Reform Bills that were tabled in Parliament for the second and third readings on Wednesday.
The legislature passed the Registration of Electors Bill & Regulations (2024), the House of Assembly (Elections) & Registration Bill (2024), and the Electoral Commission Bill (2024), which received bipartisan support.
These legislative initiatives are designed to bolster election integrity, enhance transparency, and update voting practices in alignment with recognized international standards.
According to Charles, for over 17 years this has been an ongoing debate between the opposition and the Government of Dominica, “but anyway I stand for this bill to be passed,” he said. “We have to start somewhere, we have to give and take and this is not about political parties showing how strong they are this is not about the government flexing their muscles, this is about democracy.”
“We need to work together, simple,” he added.
He went on to state that Dominica needs to move with globalization and the changes of the international world.
“I would like a set date for elections but we would have to change the constitution for a set date,” Charles stated.

UWP has no seats in Parliament and as such are not the Opposition or any kind or Parliamentary Opposition. Why do UWP supporters act like the independent parliamentarians in Opposition owe them some kind of allegiance? I do not understand this. UWP are the equivalent of Freedom party right now with no elected member. Go and organize your party to have candidates in Parliament next elections. If Skerrit calls elections tomorrow, UWP will not be ready, they will boycott again just as they did the last time, because they were not yet ready, and they are still to this date not yet ready! Take a pole and beyond any doubt the vast majority of electors of Margot would agitate for much more than the cosmetic changes made by the incumbent idiocracy to the present electoral system. They hanker for more fundamental reform than what was offered by this most deceitful regime.
What was most galling was while protesters from the Margot constituency were showered with rubber bullets and choking on teargas, this charlatan ( Charles) disowned his own people apparently trying to ingratiate himself with members of the opposite side.

While some UWP supporters are upset that the deputy leader of UWP also supported the bill, we have to understand that Mr Paris was not made a senator by UWp but rather by Anthony Charles and Anthony Charles can fire him just as the Parlrep of Salisbury fired Shawn Douglas. So I am not surprised that Mr Paris voted to support what his leader supported since all the other independent candidates supported the bill. So we need to understand the mess Mr Paris is in and go a little softer on him. The name of the game is called politics

Your comment is out of context. Time to respect each other even when opinions differ. One thing I know that many persons do not understand parliamentary procedures and mix up politics and governance. There is a difference between political parties and Government departments. There are rules governing how things are done in a government setting bureaucracy. Too many self claimed experts who have no idea what they are talking about. Should a Parliamentarian be out instigating persons to storm the highest place of Government where discussions are held for the countries benefit? What is the representative role to be sending stones, disrespecting those who work for law and order or speaking on the proposed bill? Please it is time for persons to get themselves educated on the things they do not understand.
