Marigot MP voices support for continued ‘mining’ at Deux Branche

Anthony Charles

Marigot Parliamentary Representative Anthony Charles is making his position clear—he supports the continuation of “mining” at Deux Branches, describing it as a necessary step toward national development while maintaining respect for people and the environment.

In a written statement on the contentious issue, Charles claims that the people of Marigot have always believed in progress that does not come at the expense of citizens’ rights.

He pointed to the constituency’s earlier support for mining at Crapaud Hall as proof of that balanced approach.

According to Charles, that decision was made with the full agreement of landowners, who were fairly compensated for the use of their property. He noted that the success of the Crapaud Hall project has now made it possible to move into the next phase—sourcing stone from Deux Branches for the construction of the new international airport.

At the same time, he acknowledged concerns about the environment and asserted that steps are being taken to reduce any negative impact.

He said comprehensive mitigation measures are already part of the plan for the Deux Branches site.

“Let me be clear on my position as the elected representative for Marigot: I will stand with the decision of the landowners at Crapaud Hall and Deux Branches. The fair compensation and with these safeguards in place, then we must proceed,” Charles stated.

In his statement he also emphasized that the mining effort is not just about extracting materials, but about enabling a project that could significantly benefit the country. The international airport, he said, is expected to boost the economy, create jobs, and open up new opportunities for Marigot and the wider nation.

“I support the continuation of mining at Deux Branches. The stone extracted is critical to completing the international airport, a project that will strengthen our economy, create jobs, and position Marigot and the wider nation for growth in the years ahead,” he added.

For the MP, honoring agreements made with landowners, protecting natural resources, and keeping the country on a path toward sustainable development, is the crux of the issue.

“This is about building our future while honoring the agreements made with our people and protecting the natural resources we all depend on. We move forward together, with respect for land rights, environmental stewardship, and commitment to national development,” he said.

Full statement below:

The people of Marigot have always stood for progress that respects both development and the rights of our citizens.

Our constituency demonstrated this commitment when we supported the Government’s request to mine aggregate at Craupo Haul. That decision was made with the full consent of the landowners, who were duly compensated for the use of their land. The successful mining at Craupo Haul has directly enabled the next phase of national development: the sourcing of stone from Deux Branches required for the construction of the new international airport.

To safeguard our environment, comprehensive mitigation measures are being implemented at the Deux Branches site.

Let me be clear on my position as the elected representative for Marigot: I will stand with the decision of the landowners at Craupo Haul and Deux Branches. The fair compensation and with these safeguards in place, then we must proceed.

I support the continuation of mining at Deux Branches. The stone extracted is critical to completing the international airport, a project that will strengthen our economy, create jobs, and position Marigot and the wider nation for growth in the years ahead.

This is about building our future while honoring the agreements made with our people and protecting the natural resources we all depend on. We move forward together, with respect for land rights, environmental stewardship, and commitment to national development.

If this guy doesn’t understand the difference between a quarry and a mine, there’s little prospect of him understanding the science of the environmental impact. I guess he can count cash though.

I thought hmmmm was dunce, the guy does not know the difference between a mine and a quarry. There is no mining taking place in Deux Branche, but mining or quarrying whatever it is,he support it for the construction of the airport.UWP supporters keep talking the same foolishness about buying.Between 1995 and 2000 money was meeting money, even the parrots and lunatics had money, every Dominican was rich, no poverty no unemployment, nobody hungry, nobody broke yet the people kicked UWP out of office.Dominicans are not for SALE,it is disrespectful to suggest Dominicans can be bought. It is that level of disrespect why UWP is languishing in the pit toilet.UWP and their acolytes MUST stop disrespecting the people.

if they need rock that badly why not take rock from the uncompleted rosalie petite soufrouire road
they did claim that the road could not be completed because there was rock there blocking them
this is a good opportunity to use that rock to complete the airport and by using that rock they would also be completing the rosalie petite soufrouire road
killing 2 birds with one stone
i guess your not smart enough to have figured that out

Why make such silly remarks in your opening comment, he is a representative of a constituency in Parliament, and he did his thoughtful analysis of the quarrying of materials at Deux Branche not just following the mischievous political agenda of propaganda misrepresenting facts regarding such matter. He also clarified the issue regarding the compensation of the people whose land were taken to construct the International Airport putting to rest another mischievous propaganda misrepresenting facts, why your silly remarkes.

You’re so-called illusionary current unfolding script is not
based on facts, as to the trials you are looking forward to, keep looking through your tunnel vision. What you should be looking forward to, as the majority of Dominicans are, is the completion of the International Airport a historical achievement of this Government, by the people for the people, so long.
