Every year, couples who are married, engaged, or dating gather to observe and celebrate World Marriage Day (WMD) in Dominica, as part of Marriage and Engaged Encounter.
The upcoming event, scheduled for Sunday, February 8 at 9 AM, at the St Joseph catholic Church, marks the 12th edition of this special occasion within the Diocese of Roseau.
The organizers stated in a press release that WMD is dedicated to honoring husbands and wives as the cornerstone of family life—the fundamental building block of society—and the domestic church. They add that it highlights the enduring beauty of their commitment, sacrifices, and joy found in everyday married life.
“As Married Couples gather in large numbers they are also making a bold statement that the marriage covenant between a man and a woman is God’s design for marriage,” said the release. The theme for every WMD is Love One Another …… the new commandment Jesus gave to disciples in John 15:12,” said the release.
During this service, couples will have the opportunity to renew their vows. The event will also recognize 12 couples, along with a priest and a marriage support group, for their contributions and milestones.
Awards will be presented to the longest-married couple, exemplary couples within the parish, those celebrating significant anniversaries, and a Marriage Encounter support group that has been active for three decades.
A highlight many couples anticipate each year is the dress code, which aligns with the event’s color theme. Over the years, various colors such as red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, white, and blue have been used to symbolize different aspects of love and commitment.
According to the release, this year’s theme is “Shades of Green,” representing hope—which organizers say is a fitting tribute as the jubilee year has been extended to April. All couples are warmly invited to participate, and those unable to attend the St. Joseph celebration are encouraged to wear shades of green and share their photos on social media using the hashtag #worldmarriageday2026.
All you can play the religious game as much as you want but unless we understand that Skerrit has destroyed everything in Dominican history, including marriage, we are wasting time with all our sound good encounters.
God in the beginning made his plan for marriage very clear in Gen 2;24 “a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife…”. When the church sat silently when Skerrit decided to build apartments and houses for our women that was the beginning of the destruction of marriage. The man is no longer the head of the house because he knows is his woman’s house and he can be kicked out at anytime. Not only that but the man no longer wants to marry a woman that’s head of the house and parlrep has more right in the house than the man.Since that time we see more adultery, more evil, no work for men, weed legalized for our young people and both men and women turned to drugs and alcohol because the church said Nothing! So think marriage encounter will help
