‘Mas’ and culture take center stage at upcoming film series premiere

Caribbean music and cultural dialogue will merge with cinematic storytelling as Mas + Movies, the Caribbean Carnival-inspired film series, launches locally this weekend.

Organized by Scene Productions Ltd, a media release shared that the 2026 lineup will kick off with a special preview event at the Waitukubuli Artist Association’s “Paradise of Colours & Expressions” Exhibition, hosted at the Prevo Cinemall.

The screening will take place on Saturday, January 3, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

In partnership with the Waitukubuli Artist Association and Prevo Cinemall, and with special acknowledgment to Michael Lees and Sandra Vivas for their support, the release indicates that this event will showcase the inaugural public screening of “Just Iere” (2026), a television series pilot created by Trinidadian director Shari Petti. The series is set in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and centers on Thandi, an aspiring radio host and DJ. Her journey explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery amid the city’s lively musical environment.

The event also introduces Dominica audiences to new works, including the 12-minute short “Fantastic Friday” (2023), as well as select episodes from “Mas Prep”, a documentary series that delves into the art of traditional mas-making in Trinidad and Tobago. Featured mas traditions include the Dragon, Stick Fighter, and Jab Molassie.

Mas + Movies aims to create an engaging platform for regional narratives. Rounding off the evening will be a Q&A session after the screening. Additionally, a screening is scheduled for February 1 at Movietowne during Trinidad’s Carnival season, with more territories to be announced in 2026, reports the team.

The “Paradise of Colours & Expressions” Exhibition runs until January 9, with daily hours from 11 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Saturday. Upcoming activities include a Watercolour Workshop with Aaron Hamilton on Tuesday, January 6, from 1 to 4 PM (costs: $10 for children, $20 for adults), and a panel discussion titled “The Cost Of Expression — Conversation on Art, Education, and the Economics of Creativity in Dominica” on Wednesday, January 7, from 6 to 8 PM. The panel will be hosted by Shima Rolle and feature Jenae Bell of Bell Art Studio, Jodie Dublin-Dangleben of Jaydees Naturals, and Simon Morris of Sea Cliff Gin.

Great stuff. You’ve got to include ‘books’ by Caribbean culture authors. Books, or reference to them, by your people as it relates to the colonized mindset also encourage ‘reading’ for the future.

    Great Initiative!
Congratulations to WAA for leading the way!
    Even ahead of Trinidad!

To really fulfill its mission the promoters have a great opportunity to stay in the lead, ahead of MovieTown, Trinidad, by showing these movies in the local Cinema.. @ Emerald Movies Theatre, which is as modern as any of those in MovieTown, Trinidad, and is located right here in The PrevoCinemall, Roseau, Dominica!
