Mas Domnik 2025 not just commercial, but cultural success, say officials

Chief Executive Officer of Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) Marva Williams has dubbed the 2025 Carnival Celebrations, as a unique celebration with “massive success”.

Yesterday marked the end of two days of street jump-up for Mas Domnik 2025.

According to Williams, the Carnival’s genuine reflection of local traditions, its accessible pricing, a safe environment and the celebration of cultural diversity have set Dominica apart from other Caribbean Carnivals.

“Our highlights include our colourful parades, our electrifying performances that blossom through the Bouyon artists and Calypso,” she stated, “…our spectacular display of our traditional mass.”

“When Discover Dominica set out to promote Dominica’s Carnival we promoted it under the fact that our Carnival is authentic, it’s affordable, it’s safe and diverse,” she said. “And we saw that strategy come true in the past couple weeks and reinforced on Carnival Monday and Tuesday and the weeks leading up to these days with a massive success in terms of visibility, and being able to draw locals and international visitors to this vibrant celebration of our island’s cultural heritage which is Dominica’s Carnival.”

Williams continued, “For the past couple days, we’ve recognized the significant increase in social media followers [and] we were able to bring global attention to Dominica through influencers like actress Nathalie Emmanuel who we expect to share her experience with millions.”

She believes that Dominica’s Carnival this year has helped boost the island’s profile, attracting more visitors and elevating the island’s tourism.

The lyrics of one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operas reads:

If you wish in the world to advance,
Your merits you’re bound to enhance,
You must stir it and stump it,
    And blow your own trumpet,
Or, trust me, you haven’t a chance!

How can you claim it to be a cultural success when the ONLY band on Monday’s Old Mas parade was the Good Hope Black Devils? And there were only two lapeau cabrit bands at J’Ouvert. The voluminous feather and flesh bands on Tuesday don’t represent anything to do with Dominica culture or heritage AT ALL. You are just talking utter garbage. Carnival, along with all its fringe events, was a bouyon baccanal. The historic connection to carnival and the legacy of our enslaved ancestors has been almost entirely forgotten thanks to the Ministry of Tourism getting their claws into it and turning into an economic enterprise.

o please would u just stop with that negativity and stop helping to tarnish our image and reputation as some dominicans are accustomed to do on social media as usual? for that matter I fully agree with you that we should be more historically-culturally oriented but that’s not the way to say it. if u have any sensible contributions that may be able to promote an even better event y not do so politely and respectfully Like a real dominican and just say what would be better or best than the sarcasm and negative attitude you are presenting? thanks alot.
