Mas Domnik 2026 launches at The Factory on Friday

The Ministry of Tourism, together with the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), will soon host the inaugural event, that will serve as the official commencement of Mas Domnik 2026.

A DDA press release said the celebration begins at 5:30 PM on Friday, November 28 and will be held at The Factory on Valley Road and is free and open to the public.

“Mas Domnik, celebrated as ‘The Real Mas,’ is among the region’s oldest Carnival traditions”, noted the DDA.

According to the release, its roots trace back to masquerade rituals practiced by formerly enslaved Africans in the 1700s. Over time, these customs have transformed into a vibrant festival that incorporates influences from African, European, French, and Kalinago cultures. Today, Mas Domnik is celebrated as a safe, inclusive event that is deeply rooted in authentic cultural expression and heritage, added the DDA.

A prominent feature of the launch event will be the public unveiling of the contestants vying for the title of Miss Dominica 2026. This will be their first appearance before the public, offering a glimpse of the young women who will serve as cultural ambassadors throughout the Carnival season.

It is also reported that traditional mas performances will be at the heart of the celebration, with groups such as Sennsé, Mahaut Lapo Kabwit, the Big Boom-Boom Ladies, Bwa Bwa, Darkies, the Kalinago Tete Mass, and Ban Akiyo providing live demonstrations. These performances will highlight ancestral craftsmanship, rhythmic music, and oral storytelling traditions that continue to define the cultural identity of Mas Domnik.

Organizers shared that the event will also feature performances by some of Dominica’s “top musicians and DJs”. Attendees can look forward to live acts from TK Combo and Riddim Knockaz, alongside musical sets from DJ MJ and MV on the Keys, DJ Taffy and Friends, DJ Sleem, DJ Snow, and DJ Flip.

Marva Williams, CEO of the Discover Dominica Authority, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Mas Domnik is one of our most powerful expressions of identity, creativity and resilience. As we launch the 2026 season, we celebrate the traditions that shaped us while creating new opportunities for our people, our cultural practitioners and our tourism sector. I encourage everyone to come out and experience the spirit of community and pride that makes Dominica’s Carnival unlike any other in the region.”
