Minister Alfred calls for focus on inclusion, children’s strengths for ‘Special-Education Needs Awareness Week’

Octavia Alfred

From Monday, the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence launched its ‘Special Education Needs Awareness Week’ initiative. The goal of the program is to raise awareness of the skills of children with special needs, shed light on the value of inclusivity, and demonstrate the positive effects of accepting diversity for children with special needs in society.

This week will be observed under the OECS 42nd anniversary theme ‘Vision, Integration, Sustainability, Progress’ and the sub-theme ‘Celebrating Abilities, Embracing Diversity.’ Minister for Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence, Hon. Octavia Alfred said focus should be placed on identifying the strengths of persons with disabilities rather than their weaknesses.

She spoke during the opening ceremony at the Goodwill Parish Hall on Monday. She stated that the aim of this program is to provide accommodations that will make equal practices for persons with special needs.

“Many times we test children to find their weaknesses…why are we so busy to find people’s weaknesses? That’s why we always point out what the person is not doing right…when are we going to get to a stage where we’re going to test children to find out their strengths? And this is where the Ministry of Education would like to focus on, we believe that the first step in the journey towards equitable practices is to promote awareness and understanding of special education needs within our schools and communities through education and advocacy,” she said.

Minister Alfred says it is important to educate the teachers, students, and communities about the diverse range of abilities and challenges that these children may face.

“Inclusive education goes beyond merely providing access to classrooms. It requires a comprehensive approach that tailors support to meet the unique needs of each student. We must ensure that our teachers and educators are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment which appreciates diversity, differentiation, and different learning styles.”

In this regard, she revealed that over 220 teachers and 58 principals were trained in applying the student support and referral process or peripheral process at all primary schools to support students experiencing difficulties in academics and behavior.

Alfred stated that over 277 principals and teachers were trained in progress monitoring to ensure that students identified as being at risk are constantly being monitored using protocols and providing needed intervention to give them support. Additionally, 27 primary school teachers were trained in the use of a micro-diagnostic reading test, which is a test used with students from grade K to form 5, facilitated by the micro–University College and supported by the special education unit.

“In order to truly celebrate abilities, we must provide opportunities for students with special education needs to showcase their talents and skills; extracurricular activities clubs, competitions, festivals, all of these should be designed to accommodate diverse abilities and interests. Highlighting their achievements, will not only boost their self-confidence, but also challenge all the stereotypes we have going wrong and inspire others to embrace their own unique ability”

What an empty vessel this one is. Worse even, she can’t afford to buy a new dress. Always wearing the same attire. Clearly designer cloth are reserved for CM and Gucci, funded of course by state funds.

Years ago, I tried to promote an understanding of dyslexia in our schools but was told by the Ministry for Education that they have programs for slow learners. What they don’t understand is that a dyslexic child is not a slow learner – far from it – but a different learner. Dyslexia is not a disability but an ability. Up to 20% of children are dyslexic.

As an artist and inventive engineer, my work benefits from being dyslexic. Furthermore, age (I am approaching four score years) does not diminish its advantages. Indeed, it gives me greater confidence in being unashamedly different.

Deeds and not words that count. The best thing about this initiative is its objectives. Nothing more would be accomplished beyond the goals ad aims.

When we examine the health, national security, economic, manufacturing, agricultural systems, they are monumental failures. Education under the worst minister in the history of the nation will be similarly wounded by the ineptitude of the present shepherd.

Absolutely nothing works that is connected to the incumbency. The Financial Services Unit, IPO, Parliament, Judiciary, Presidency, Electoral Commission, in fact, the entire civil service.Dominicans are living in a FAILED STATE where CORRUPTION is romanticised.
