The community of Anse de Mai is reportedly poised for significant development with the impending construction of a new jetty, a project valued at EC$4,075,350. The Government of Dominica has shared that it officially solidified this undertaking on Friday, May 2, 2025, by signing a contract with local firm Offshore Civil & Marine Inc.
A press release from the prime minister’s office listed the primary objectives of this project as being multifaceted, aiming to enhance maritime safety and bolster the operational capacity of the port. Beyond these infrastructure improvements, the new jetty is anticipated to be a catalyst for economic activity, strengthen disaster preparedness capabilities, and provide vital support to both the fisheries and tourism sectors within the community.
The government reports that the existing jetty will be demolished to make way for the new structure. The press release also said that the new facility will be a 65-metre-long reinforced concrete deck, supported by 26 tubular steel piles. Included in the design are essential infrastructure for modern port operations, such as potable water access, lighting to facilitate night-time activities, and critical docking equipment like fenders, bollards, and ladders.
Upon completion, the upgraded facility is expected to significantly benefit the local fisheries sector by offering safer and more reliable docking options for fishers, explained the government. This enhancement is projected to stimulate community and economic development. Furthermore, the jetty will serve a vital role in disaster preparedness and response, providing a reliable access point for the delivery of emergency supplies and supporting evacuation efforts in the wake of storms or hurricanes.
Hon. Lakeyia Joseph, the Parliamentary Representative for the Paix Bouche Constituency, emphasized the transformative potential of the project, stating, “This jetty is about creating opportunity. It will bring new jobs, from construction to tourism to small business ventures. It will empower our vendors, our youth, our artisans. It will revitalize our community life and spark economic activity that ripples into every home, every classroom, every household.”
Addressing the younger generation, she remarked, “To our children—imagine the possibilities. Imagine being able to walk down to the port and see boats coming in not just with fish, but with ideas, with tourists, with opportunity…Your future is being built right here.”
The Government of Dominica stated that it views the construction of the Anse de Mai jetty as a tangible demonstration of its ongoing commitment to the upliftment of rural communities and the promotion of climate-resilient, inclusive development across the nation.
